The banks of the Loire from Saint-Claude-de-Diray

As soon as you leave the village of Saint-Claude-de-Diray, the walk takes you past vineyards belonging to the Cheverny AOC production area. It then follows the banks of the Loire, with the Château de Ménars, situated on the opposite bank, where the Marquise de Pompadour spent her final years. On the way back, the old viaduct with its many arches can be admired from every angle before the village bell tower comes into view on the horizon, signalling your arrival.

Description of the walk

Start at the car park on Place de l’Église in Saint-Claude-de-Diray.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the main street, Rue de la Loire, with your back to the church. Pass Rue de la Franchetière on your right, then take the second street on your left and continue for 800m until you reach the bridge over the Noue.

(1) Turn right onto the grassy path that runs alongside the Noue, just before the bridge. Follow the path for a good kilometre until you reach a crossroad.

(2) Turn left onto this side street towards Ménars Castle. Cross the Loire embankment (with care) to take the path opposite.

(3) The grassy path runs alongside a tarmac path that forms part of the ‘La Loire à Vélo’ route. Follow the river on your right for nearly 3 km.

(4) Pass through the gate marked ‘La Loire à Vélo’ and follow the wide path, ignoring a turn-off to the right and heading towards the leisure centre. Once past the sports facilities on the right, turn onto the first path on the left towards the embankment.

(5) Before you can cross the embankment, you must go round a restaurant, following the water sports centre. Once you have crossed the embankment with care, continue along the tarmac path opposite. This first follows the embankment, then bends to the right and crosses the Noue. Pass the first junction.

(6) Turn left at the next junction, towards the viaduct. Pass under the arch then turn left onto the path leading up to the viaduct. After 300m, the path narrows as it crosses over another path.

(7) Continue for about fifty metres past the narrow metal passage to descend from the viaduct, then take the path you have just crossed, on the left with your back to the viaduct.

(8) Turn right at the first junction onto the tarmac-surfaced Voie Gallin. Ignore the side paths.

(9) Turn left onto the cross-cutting Route de Saint Dyé. Continue along the hard-packed track for 200m, passing Rue de Léry on your right. The wide track runs alongside a vineyard on your right.

(10) Turn right onto the hard-packed track immediately after passing the vineyard, then take the first path on the left, the Sentier des Meuniers, towards the bell tower of Saint-Claude-de-Diray. Initially a wide, hard-packed track designed to facilitate the grape harvest, the Sentier des Meuniers narrows, crosses a narrow lane and then reaches the first houses. Turn right onto Rue Principale to reach the church of Saint-Claude-de-Diray and its car park, the starting point of the walk (S/E).

Hello
We walked this route starting from the Vineuil campsite, where we were staying for a few days.
A lovely route, but very exposed to the heat of the sun.
The banks of the Loire are very pleasant and offer the chance to meet some friendly people.
At point 1, the path just before the bridge was barely visible and overgrown with tall grass, which made the walk a bit of a struggle but without any major difficulties

Thank you for this route,
From Lorraine

Route completed on a hybrid bike.
No difficulties, flat terrain, dirt tracks or small tarmac roads.
Very pleasant along the banks of the Loire (points 3 to 5).
2 points of interest: Vineuil Viaduct and view of Ménars Castle.
Best avoided during a heatwave as there is little shade.

Hello,
Thank you for your suggestions for walks; we’ve done three this summer, when there aren’t any on the local calendar.
We did the walk this morning in the opposite direction.
The young farmers were organising an event this weekend near Nozieux Castle (a ploughing competition, etc.). Thanks to them for their efforts.
The break was welcome before finishing the walk in the heat.
This section of the Loire à Vélo cycle route, where the dirt track has been preserved, is lovely.
I’ve attached two photos:
A millet field with Ménars Castle in the background.
An information panel taken from the viaduct.
