The starting point is at the Trouville-Deauville SNCF train station, which is convenient for those arriving by train or coach, as there are many car parks in the area (although they are paid).
(S/E) With your back to the station, head towards the roundabout on the right and the bridge that connects Deauville to Trouville. Just before the bridge, take Quai de la Touques on the left and follow the promenade along the river.
(1) The peninsula
In this neighbourhood, which is currently undergoing urban redevelopment, you walk along the marina on one side and the Touques on the other, the river that separates Deauville from Trouville. There are some very interesting views of Trouville, its port, casino and fish market.
Continue your walk along the meandering Touques and cross the lock bridge (be aware of the tide times: at high tide, there is a lift bridge at the end of the yacht basin on your left, level with the two gazebos). On the other side of the footbridge, you will arrive at the Quai de la Marine, which is actually a wide boulevard. Follow this boulevard to the left until you reach a small square, from which three streets branch off to the right. Take the leftmost of the three, Rue Gambetta, and follow it straight ahead until you reach Place Morny.
(2) Place Morny (town centre)
This is the commercial heart of Deauville, with its terraces, local shops and market, which takes place on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings (and almost every day during the tourist season). The square is named after the founder of the town, Napoleon III's brother-in-law.
Walk along the square on the right-hand side, past the café terraces, and take thesecond street on the right, Rue Désiré le Hoc.
The Town Hall
At a new roundabout with a carillon, you will see the Town Hall, built in Norman style in the 1950s, and its gardens on the left. From this square, enjoy the beautiful view of the perpendicular street, Rue Robert Fossorier, which runs from the racecourse on the left to the marina on the right.
Continue straight ahead towards the pedestrian area. The street is now called Rue Eugène Colas. Pass the first intersection and continue straight ahead to reach Place Yves-St-Laurent, at the foot of the casino.
(3) Place Yves Saint-Laurent
This is Deauville's "luxury" district, with the prestigious Normandy Hotel on the right with its green half-timbering, luxury boutiques and the imposing casino, one of the largest in France.
Turn right to follow the casino along Rue Lucien Barrière. Cross the busy Boulevard Eugène Cornuché to continue along a very wide pedestrian walkway that leads to Deauville beach. Turn left onto the Promenade des Planches.
The beach and the Planches
The large sandy beach of Deauville and its famous colourful parasols appear along this wooden promenade, built in the 1920s to provide toilets for the elegant ladies of the Roaring Twenties. The promenade runs alongside the beach huts, which now bear the names of famous American actors.
Go to the end of the wooden promenade. On the cobbled alley, pass the Plage reception hall on your right and then turn left to return to the town. Cross Boulevard Cornuché again and continue straight ahead towards Rue Pasteur.
(4) The villa district
The most beautiful and oldest villas in Deauville are in this neighbourhood. Just stroll through these streets and discover the Anglo-Norman architecture of the early 20th century.
Cross Rue des Villas, then turn left onto Rue du Général Leclerc. Turn right onto Rue Raspail, then left again onto Rue Victor Hugo and finally right onto Rue Laplace. Cross the busy Avenue de la République to reach the church opposite.
The church and its square
The Church of Saint-Augustin was built in the 19th century. It is surrounded by a pleasant public garden with trees and pretty villas.
Walk along the right-hand side of the church to reach Avenue Florian de Kergorlay. Keep the Avenue du Golf on your right, then the Avenue Alfred Rousseau. You will then walk along the back of the auction house. After passing Rue Jules Saucisse on your left, continue straight ahead towards Rue du Moulin Saint-Laurent, which climbs steeply and has only one pavement on the left. At the top of this hill is the Church of Saint-Laurent.
(5) Old Deauville
This is the site of the original village of Deauville, which had only a few dozen inhabitants before the 19th century. The Saint-Laurent Chapel offers a magnificent view of the town of Deauville, the English Channel and the Seine estuary as far as Le Havre. (Please note that access to the chapel and its small garden is only open on certain dates, as part of a guided tour).
Go back down the street you came up and after about 200 metres, turn right onto Chemin de l'Eau. Walk along the houses on your left until you reach a crossroads at the bottom.
(6) Villa Strassburger
This is one of the most beautiful and largest villas in Deauville, built in the Norman style. It is now owned by the town of Deauville, which rents it out for receptions and weddings.
Keep the avenue lined with plane trees on your right and Rue Jules Saucisse on your left and continue straight ahead towards Avenue Hocquart de Turtot. Pass the racecourse stables on your right and the auction house on your left. Shortly after the church, turn right onto Boulevard Mauger.
(7) Racecourse
Deauville's worldwide reputation is mainly linked to horses. Walking along Boulevard Mauger, one of Deauville's most beautiful streets, you will pass the Touques racecourse, which hosts prestigious horse races mainly in July and August and in winter, from late October to early February.
After passing the racecourse on your right, cross Rue de l'Avenir, then at the next intersection, turn slightly left, continuing to follow Boulevard Mauger towards a roundabout. At the roundabout, take the road on the right, lined with trees, to go along the sports complex and return to the SNCF train station (S/E).
