The Sully Linden Tree

Sully, then a minister under Henry IV, donated a lime tree to the village of Montgibaud. Now lost following the storm of 1999, this lime tree, planted in front of the church, was intended to provide shelter for the villagers’ gatherings held after mass.
This route through the Limousin countryside follows springs that flow along the paths, passes through woodland, and leads to hamlets or opens out onto rolling meadows. You’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the motte at Coursaleix and Plazat.

Description of the walk

Park in the church car park.

(S/E) Turn left towards Lubersac (D85). Cross the D39 with care and head straight on towards Lhortolary.

(1) In Lhortolary (the château is in a state of disrepair), turn left onto the track, pass a small pond and continue straight on.

(2) At the junction with the track, turn right. You’ll come to a Y-junction.

(3) Take the first path on the right. You’ll come to a gate.

(4) Take the sunken track on the left. Cross a small stream and follow it. Continue along the same track.

(5) Take the path on the left to reach Plazat. Cross the ditch and take the path uphill (view of the houses at Le Bos at the lower end of a plateau). Reach the hamlet of Le Vert by following the tarmac road.

(6) On the road, turn left. At Mas-Lafond, pass between the houses then follow the path opposite. Return to the junction you passed earlier.

(3) Turn right and follow the same route as on the way out to return to the first junction.

(2) Carry on straight ahead until you reach the road (Allée de Chênes). On the D39, turn right, then turn left carefully towards La Croix du Mas (you’ll see the feudal motte as you reach the Chemin de Coursaleix). Reach La Croix du Mas.

(7) Turn left. At the next junction, keep left to reach Montgibaud and the starting car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Montgibaud family mainly resided at ‘Vieux-Châtenet’ in the parish of Masseret. Originally from the parish of Montgibaud, they owned the fief of La Vernine (in the village) and that of La Joubertie there. It was on this fief inthe 17th century, where a château stands, that several generations lived, were baptised, married and buried in Montgibaud. The fief subsequently passed to the Burguet family. The Château de La Joubertie, which is privately owned, is not open to visitors.
This18th-century rural church, which is neither Romanesque nor Gothic, is dedicated to Saint Martial (the first bishop of Limoges).
Near the church stand the Calvary and the War Memorial.
100 metres from the church, taking the D85 towards Benayes, you can reach the Pelateau viewpoint. From here, you can see the towns of Lubersac and Pompadour thanks to a 180° view over the Limousin countryside.

Completed today, starting from Montgibaud. It’s very well signposted. A mix of roads, country lanes and forest paths, plus a stretch through small hamlets.
A quiet but very pleasant route.
Take care when crossing the D39 and avoid it if it has rained in the past few days, as even in sunny weather, some sections in the forest remain quite damp.

There is an error in the description: at the gate in point 4, you should take the sunken path on the left, not on the right.
