Description of the walk

Park near the church in Quenza.

(S/E) With your back to the church, take the road going up towards the Cuscionu plateau. At the top of this road, you will come to a yellow signpost marked with orange Mare a mare markings. Turn left towards Serra di Scopamena. When you reach a river, do not take the ford below, but cross the footbridge on the right.

(1) After crossing the bridge, turn right 100 metres further on. Leave the track and take the path on the right that climbs uphill (it is not necessarily well marked). Look for the orange markings.

(2) Cross a track to continue on the path that leads to a tarmac road.

(3) Cross the road and take the path that climbs northwards through the holm oak forest, then turns north-west.

(4) At "Chez Pierro", a horse riding centre, turn left and follow the road for a good ten minutes.

(5) Turn right onto the path towards Serra di Scopamena and Aullène and begin your descent. Cross a river via a footbridge before climbing back up to a place called Lavu Donacu.

(6) There are orange signs and markings indicating the direction of Serra di Scopamena. You will arrive at a track which you should follow for several hundred metres, passing Bocca d'Arja Petrosa. Stay on the track.

(7) At the crossroads, leave the track and follow the path straight ahead heading south. You will have a beautiful view of the Aiguilles de Bavella. When you reach a pass, you can access the summit of Punta di a cuciurpula by taking the path on the left (see other Visorando descriptions ). Otherwise, continue on your way. Fifty metres further on, you will come to a fork.

(8) Leave the Mare à mare and turn left onto the path that descends. This path, marked with cairns, leads to the heart of the village of Serra di Scopamena. At the end of this descent, you will come to a set of steps. Then, at the tarmac road, turn right, passing in front of the wash house where there is a fountain. After reaching the wash house, turn right at the stop sign and walk about 50 metres.

(9) You will come to a wrought iron information panel. Stay on the road and, 50 metres further on, you will find a bar/restaurant/grocery store just below the town hall building. Alternatively, turn left onto the cobbled descent. At the end of this descent, turn right onto the cobbled steps. Pass by an old restored mill. Continue downhill towards Sorbollano.

(10) Turn left here towards Sorbollano and leave the Mare a Mare. This section is marked in yellow. Before arriving in the village of Sorbollano, there is a small fountain on your left after crossing the stream.

(11) Pass in front of the church, where there is another fountain. Leave the main road and stay on the small tarmac road that passes near the cemetery.

(12) At the stop sign, turn right onto the road for about 100 metres, then turn left onto the downhill path marked in orange. This is a beautiful, long section through a holm oak forest. Cross a footbridge and join a track suitable for vehicles.

(13) Take this track towards Quenza. Near the village, pass in front of the Sainte-Marie Chapel.

(14) Turn right, then left before reaching the main road through the village of Quenza. Turn right and you will arrive at the church (S/E).

This hike is quite strenuous (I agree with the other comments, with an almost hour-long climb at the start!), but I would happily do it again. The scenery is quite varied, and above all, there are several opportunities to swim in some stunning spots! We split the walk in two and had lunch in Serra. Walking time: 5½ hours. Be sure to bring something to cover your head, as a third of the walk is in the sun!

A circuit of little interest, with few scenic views and a lot of climbing.
The three villages are located towards the end of the route.
This route is still good for keeping fit, as it is quite challenging.

For lovers of forests, scrubland and animals (cows, pigs, horses), this hike is for you.
There are few wide open views.
The first climb is not too bad, but the last one is tough after 13 km in your legs.

A hike that lived up to our expectations with superb views of the Bavella peaks. The start from Quenza is the most difficult. Clear signposting and description. Just be careful because at point 8, it is easy to forget to leave the Mare à Mare trail... so take a short detour to reach SERRA and go down the main street to the restaurant-bar/Proxi to find the route described.

A superb route offering a variety of sights and atmospheric trails, sometimes high up, sometimes along a stream. Wild pigs, cows and lots of chestnuts, as well as beautiful villages showcasing the region's architectural heritage.
Please note that at the end of the route, point 12, the footbridge is closed by municipal decree. If there is not too much water, there is a passage over stones a little upstream or a trunk downstream from the footbridge.
