The Rocher du Grand Sangle

Starting from Chaley, in the Albarine valley, climb to the top of the Rocher du Grand Sangle, which offers a beautiful view of the gorges.

There is a longer but more difficult loop that I have unpublished , which can be seen here, with the latest review

Description of the walk

In Chaley, park in the "canyon" car park between the campsite and a sports field.

No signposts

(S/E) Head west and immediately turn right towards the village, onto a street that runs alongside a watercourse with old mills. At the end of this street, turn right and, a few metres further on, take the street on the left.

(1) At the intersection, go straight up Rue du Content. When the street ends, continue up the path that continues along it.

(2) At the fork in the paths, turn right and continue climbing through the woods. Further on, ignore a path that branches off to the left. About a hundred metres after this, pass a spring on the left, opposite a "No Entry" sign, and follow the path that veers slightly to the left. Be careful, as the path is narrow in places and runs alongside steep drops. Further on, the path widens and continues uphill in a series of hairpin bends. You will eventually come to a road.

(3) Follow it to the left towards the nearby village of Lacoux. Pass in front of the church and continue through the village on this main road.
On leaving the village, at a fork in the road, follow the road that climbs up to the left of the war memorial. Look out for a yellow and blue sign shortly afterwards.

Yellow and blue signpost

Continue along this small road for about 100 m, then look out for a path that branches off to the left.

(4) Follow it until you come to a gravel path, turn right and join a road. Immediately turn left onto the path, Route Forestière du Chemin Neuf, which runs above the village of Lacoux. About 500 m further on, ignore a path on the left and you will soon come to a crossroads (there is a sign for Route Forestière du Chemin Neuf).

(5) Turn left for a round trip to the summit of Rocher du Grand Sangle. On this section, the yellow and blue markings are still visible but very old. Follow a beautiful path through the woods. Ignore a vague path on the right. Further on, sharp limestone pavements appear at the edge of the path. Be very careful, as they are covered with very deep crevasses. Stay on the path. You will reach the viewpoint on the Rocher du Grand Sangle. Be careful, there is sharp limestone pavement here too, so do not get too close to the precipice.

(6) View of the Albarine valley and the village of Chaley. Retrace your steps to the previous intersection.

(5) Follow the path on the left. About 100 m further on, leave it for a path on the right, which passes above the path taken on the way up and Lacoux. Pass at the foot of a statue of the Virgin Mary. Continue and you will come to a wide path. Go a few metres to the right to rejoin the road. Leave the yellow and blue markings.

(7) Follow the road to the right for about 200 m, then take a path on the left that cuts across a bend in the road. Join the road further on, follow it to the left around a bend and return to the intersection with the path you took on the way there.

No markings

(4) Take the same route as on the way there to descend to Chaley. Cross Lacoux following the road.

(3) Don't miss the path straight ahead in the hairpin bend. Be careful on the descent through the woods.

(2) Turn left.

(1) Leave the outward route for a tour of the village: follow Rue du Château Foliet to the right. At the intersection, go a few metres to the right to see the Ruisseau de la Gorge, then turn back, leave Rue de l'Église on your right, then follow Rue de la Cour to the right. At the end of this street, follow the path that winds between gardens and, after crossing a meadow, you will arrive at the road running alongside the Albarine. Follow it to the left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This is a moderately difficult hike with a fairly steep climb on a trail that requires caution: it is a beautiful trail but narrow in places along the edge of the ravine. Please be careful. Standard hiking equipment is recommended, with one or two walking sticks if possible.
There are deep cracks in the sharp limestone pavement, so watch where you put your feet if you stray from the path. Keep dogs on a leash.
This route is dangerous for children.

Loop variation suggested in a review dated 28/08/2024:

After the memorial stone (7), take a wide path that branches off to the left. After entering the woods, you will come to a crossroads with several paths. The direction of Chaley is indicated in felt pen on a signpost. Going downhill in a southerly direction, you will pass through the Combe de Vaux de Boeuf mentioned above.
Do not take this path, but continue straight ahead on the path that climbs up the other side of the valley and joins a forest track.
Follow it to the left and after a hairpin bend to the right, in a wide left-hand bend, take a path heading south along a horse paddock.
Although a little overgrown at first, the trail is nevertheless very clear and takes you into the Combe Suzaire via a fairly steep path.
Then return to Chaley via the path climbing up to the Chaley canyon. There was a lot of water and the pools were well filled on 23 August.
Return to the car park via the garden path.
In total, 13 km and 700 metres of elevation gain

Worth a visit

We got lost right from the start by taking the wrong route, which led us between Evosges and Lacoux, adding an extra 5 km to our journey. We were able to enjoy the breathtaking view from the rock... Splendid.

The path between Chaley and Lacoux is very congested with fallen trees and overgrown vegetation. It's a shame that this path isn't maintained... We had to use secateurs to get through...
Otherwise, the walk is varied, with magnificent views of the Sangle rock. The path to the statue of the Virgin Mary is very pretty with beautiful views
We didn't have the energy to return by the same route, so we took the road between Lacoux and Chaley, which is quite long but quiet
All in all, it was about a 5.5-hour walk
Best done in late autumn or winter when there is less vegetation

Loop variant suggested by Charmut, easy to navigate thanks to the description and a hiking map on a GPS app.
Excellent view from the Virgin Mary statue and Rocher de Sangle.
It was nice to see a few canyoners in the turquoise pools.
The paths on both the ascent and descent are neglected and overgrown with vegetation!
This route is for experienced hikers.

I did this hike again last Sunday, in the opposite direction, and via the alternative route I described last year. The weather was magnificent and the temperature was like early summer!
The climb up Combe Suzaire is long, but luckily a break to pick wild garlic along the stream in the gorge allowed us to catch our breath and ensure we had something for our evening meal.
There were lots of fallen trees across the trail throughout the loop and, as mentioned in the previous comment, the end of the walk after the junction with the closed tunnel circuit was more like clearing than walking.

We followed the route described above but in reverse, i.e. a steep climb up the Combe Suzaire (no one else around!), marked with yellow signs, which are easy to follow. We reached the memorial stone, then the statue of the Virgin Mary and the viewpoint at Rocher de Sangle, which was quite busy on this sunny afternoon. Beautiful view of the village of Lacoux, Hauteville, Chaley and the Alps. We descended via the village of Lacoux and the path described above. After crossing the path of the old railway tunnels (sign prohibiting walking), we passed through the recent landslide area. And sometimes you have to "chop wood" to reach the village of Chaley.

Thank you for your feedback and for the loop you suggested, which I will include in the description as soon as possible.
The previous loop is still on my page, even though it has been unpublished. I refer to it in the "See also" section when I talk about the photos
Best regards

There was a hike on Visorando called "Rocher du Grand Sangle" but it has recently disappeared because I downloaded it on 23 August!
There were some alarming comments about the danger of the descent via the Combe de Vaux de Boeuf.
Admittedly, the terrain is difficult, a little confusing and not to be attempted in trainers. Nevertheless, the trail is there and is used by lovers of forgotten paths!
It's a shame it's been removed.
So I used the guidebook for this hike, which is still available, to find a nicer descent to do as a loop.
The entire beginning, from the climb to the summit, is very well described. Follow it to point 7.
After the stele (7), take a wide path that branches off to the left. After entering the woods, you will come to a crossroads with several paths. The direction of Chaley is marked in felt pen on a signpost. Descending southwards, you will pass through the Combe de Vaux de Boeuf, which I mentioned earlier.
Do not take this path, but continue straight ahead on the path that climbs up the other side of the valley and joins a forest track.
