Description of the route

The route starts from the centre of the village of Servillanges, in the commune of Venteuges, about 7 km west of Saugues.

(S/E) Walk up to the departmental road (D589), turn left and continue along this road to the hamlet of Pompeyrin.

(1) Turn left and take the small road that climbs towards Sept Sols.

(2) In the hamlet, continue along this road until you reach the entrance to the hamlet of La Veysseyre.

(3) At the entrance to this hamlet, turn right onto a path which begins to climb after 100 metres. At the three-way junction, about 250 metres after the start of the path, do not take the path that climbs steeply to the left (short alternative route), but continue along the main path to a Y-junction.

(4) Turn left and pass under a power line. The path climbs up to near the summit of Montchauvet.

(5) View of the Monts du Cantal. Montchauvet is about 100m away (cross at the summit). Continue to the next junction.

(6) Keep slightly to the right, following the path as it begins to descend.

(7) At the junction, take the hairpin bend to the right and join the road coming from the Col de Bugeac (D33).

(8) Carry on to the left; the road descends steeply to the Baraque de Bugeac and reaches the village of Bugeac.

(9) At Le Hameau, follow the winding road down and continue on the D33 until you reach the four-way junction.

(10) Turn left towards Venteuges and pass through the hamlets of La Grifoulière, Le Mont and Giberges in turn. You’ll reach the Ruisseau du Pontajou at the bend, then, a few metres further on, the road to Servières.

(11) Turn right and carry on to Pontajou.

(12) On entering the village, leave it on your right and continue left towards Venteuges. There is a fairly steep climb for about 300 metres.

(13) At the four-way junction, turn left onto the D589 departmental road until you reach the sign for Servillanges. Turn left and head back to the village centre via the road you took at the start (S/E).

Notes

The section of the path between La Veysseyre and Montchauvet is quite a challenging climb.

IGN maps show ‘Montchouvet’, but on the ground it is definitely Montchauvet that is meant…

Thank you for pointing that out; I’ve just amended the title and description, and also added a brief note to the practical information section to avoid any further confusion...

Hello,
Yes, the name is indeed Montchauvet (I know the area quite well); in fact, that’s what I’d written in the description, but the Visorando moderator changed the name without telling me, probably thinking I’d got it wrong.
As for the ruins at the foot of Montchauvet, I’m not sure whether they’re still open to the public either.

A small (and rather insignificant) clarification from a walker who hails from this region and is in love with the Margeride: on military maps, it is written as ‘Montchouvet’, but in reality this mountain is called Montchauvet. For your information: at its foot, on the north-eastern slope, lies the archaeological site of a medieval village. However, I’m not sure whether it’s currently open to visitors.
