Along the beaches of Bourail

This route starts at the foot of the iconic Bonhomme de Bourail statue, then follows two trails marked by the South Province Tourist Office: the Sentier des Trois Baies and the Sentier Botanique de la Forêt des Cycas. These two short trails are very accessible for families and well signposted. The trail runs alongside Plage de la Roche Percée, known as one of the largest sea turtle nesting sites in New Caledonia.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the right-hand side of Route du Poste de Mer, just before a large information sign.

(S/E) Follow the yellow markings of the Sentier des Trois Baies and head towards the beach.

(1) Follow the path that branches off to the right, where stairs lead you up above the cliff: you will be rewarded with your first panoramic view at the end of this short climb.

(2) Cross the road and follow the yellow-marked trail opposite, which descends. Enjoy the walk through the magnificent grove of columnar pines.

(3) Leave the yellow trail for a detour to the left along Turtle Bay Beach. As with the other three beaches on the walk, if the season is right, you may see adult turtles laying eggs or young turtles emerging from their nests. However, do not approach the turtles as this is strictly prohibited. Walk to the end of the beach.

(4) Return to the marked trail.

(3) Pick up the trail on the left and continue to the next beach, Baie des Amoureux. You will come to a three-way junction in the trail.

(5) Follow the path down to the left.

(6) Leave the trail to explore Baie des Amoureux beach, then retrace your steps.

(6) Continue the route by following the path that branches off to the left.

(7) Leave the path to explore the small Boubou Beach and retrace your steps.

(7) Continue to the end of the trail, still on the left, and reach the viewpoint that marks the end of the hike in this direction.

(8) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction without making the detours to the two beaches.

(5) Leave the Sentier des Trois Baies and follow the road on the left. Continue straight ahead until you reach the second crossroads.

(9) Take the Route de la Baie des Tortues on the right, following the road signs for the lighthouse and Notre-Dame des Flots. A hundred metres further on, follow the path that climbs up to your right; an old sign indicates the location of the old lighthouse: a very dilapidated building but with a magnificent view from its observation platform on the south side of the building, accessible via a ladder that can be slippery, so climb at your own risk.

(10) Continue to follow the path downhill towards the south until you reach a fork where two tracks flank a path that climbs uphill. Take the middle path and continue to Notre-Dame des Flots: panoramic view.

(11) Continue to follow the path downhill towards the south until you reach the first viewpoint you encountered on the way up.

(2) Take the path back on the left.

(1) Walk along Roche Percée Beach and enjoy the view of the iconic Bonhomme de Bourail, trying to spot the turtles. Walk to a driftwood sculpture.

(12) Take the path on the left that leads back to the road, which you must cross to access the Cycas Forest Botanical Trail. Follow the official yellow markings to complete the trail, which features magnificent tree species and a section of mangrove forest, then return to the road. Turn right and continue straight ahead to the car park (S/E).
