From Matemale, drive to Col De Creu via the Route du Col de Creu (the D4), 3 km from the southern entrance to Matemale. From this pass, you can descend towards Railleu.
(S/E) (altitude 1715) Take the track heading north. It quickly veers east, so simply follow it. During the journey, you can see Canigou, Madres and Mont Coronat on the right. Follow this track for about 4.5 km. Arrive at Coll De Sansa (1775 m).
(1) Be careful, there are six possible directions. We will head towards Madres, due east. The refuge is normally signposted 1.7 km away. After 1.4 km, you will arrive at a clearing.
(2) Follow the trail to the right, south-southwest. Leave the yellow-red marked trail (variant of the Tour du Capcir). Very soon you will come to another clearing, where a sign invites you to the Refuge Les Estagnols 200 m away (1792 m). The view is magnificent. Please note that in heavy snowfall, the lake (Les Estagnols) is invisible under the layer of ice and snow. Follow the tracks left by other hikers.
(3) After a break (turning around), we head back in the opposite direction to Coll de Sansa.
(1) Head straight ahead, due west. In fact, you need to find the yellow-red markings for the Tour du Capcir. We descend via this other marked trail, which is rarely used in winter.
Simply follow this track (yellow-red markings) closely, which will take us back to Matemale. After about 3 km, we arrive at a fork (1612 m).
(4) Please note: Leave the trail that descends to your right. Continue for about 400 m, following the yellow-red markings, heading due south.
(5) Leave the yellow-red markings. Continue straight ahead on the track that climbs gently. Follow this track, continue climbing and after a few bends you will arrive at the Col de Creu
