Le Gué du Grain

In the heart of a vast wooded area in the countryside of Chambourg-sur-Indre, you can set off on a 100% nature walk, mainly in the shade of the trees. A few steps across fields and through the hamlets of Chambourg will take you into the woods, where you may have the chance to spot a deer or other forest dwellers.

Description of the walk

Departure from Les Sanguiers in Chambourg-sur-Indre.

Parking: Communal land on the RD94 on the left after the first warehouse coming from the junction with the RD943.

Yellow markings

(S/E) Head south-west and follow the D94 towards Dolus-le-Sec. After about 200 m, you will come to a triple fork.

(1) Turn left towards Fosse Noue. When you reach the hamlet, turn left again and continue along a small road.

(2) At a left-hand bend, leave the road and take a path on the right. At the first crossroads, go straight ahead. Ignore a path on the right and descend towards a wood. Enter the wood, continue downhill, ignore a path coming from the right and you will reach the Gué du Grain.

(3) Cross the Ruisseau de Châtres and continue along the path opposite, which soon turns right. Go uphill, stay on the main marked path, which winds under the deciduous trees, and ignore the paths branching off to the sides.

(4) At the end of the path, turn left. After about 100 metres, turn left again. Walk along a private pond on your right and you will come to a T-junction at the edge of a clearing.

(5) Then turn sharply right. At a three-way junction, follow the straight path to the right. Continue straight ahead (south-west) until you reach a star-shaped crossroads.

(6) Take the Allée de Guilloteaux, which is roughly opposite (west-southwest). Continue straight ahead until you reach the edge of the woods.

(7) Then turn right twice and walk north-east along the edge of the field on your left and the woods on your right.

(8) Enter the woods again (elevation 112) and continue straight ahead (north-east). At the next intersections, continue on the same path and keep heading north-east until you reach the edge of the woods.

(9) Cross the Ruisseau de Châtres stream again and follow the path up through the fields. You will come out onto a small road. Follow it to the left towards the hamlet of Fousse Noue.

(10) As you enter the hamlet, take the first road on the left. Cross the D94 with caution and continue straight ahead into the hamlet of Monchenin. At the next crossroads, turn right and return to the D94.

(1) Turn left to quickly return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

For more information about things to see along the way (views, monuments, heritage, etc.), please refer to the descriptions of the photos on the route.

The Loches National Forest:
The Loches National Forest covers nearly 3,600 hectares to the south-east of Chambourg-sur-Indre. Formerly a royal forest, it retains its undeniable historical value with its pyramids, vast avenues and ponds. Its oak trees, which can reach 250 years of age and measure over 40 metres in height, are particularly prized for the manufacture of barrels.

The "Roman Bridge"
On the Ile Auger, on the banks of the Indre, stand the remains of a15th-century bridge, rather misnamed the "Roman Bridge". Several arches still span the river, in a green setting conducive to relaxation.

To walk further...
Starting from Chambourg-sur-Indre, another circular walking route awaits you: the Indre Valley (13 km - blue markings). The GR® 46 and GRP® Sentier Historique de Touraine also cross the commune.

The route is pleasant, but the problem is that it is poorly maintained, with brambles and tall grass. It has a wilder side, which some may like, but it is difficult with children.

A pleasant, shaded walk on a very hot day, with uninteresting scenery and a beautiful carpet of wild orchids in the woods.

La Brèche au Diable:
Beautiful yellow-marked walk. From point 1 to 4: too many yellow marks, difficult to find your way around. For the rest of the walk, no problem.
