The Gourg Goutonniet and Notre-Dame de Lère in Talairan

The Gourg Goutonnier, an enormous giant’s kettle carved out over millennia in the bed of the Nielle, is the destination of this hike. You reach it after a charming walk through vineyards and heath. The return route takes you past the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Lère, which stands in a secluded spot amidst a sea of vines over which it seems to watch jealously. All the charm of the Corbières in a relatively short route, ideal for a half-day outing.

Description of the walk

On arriving in Talairan via the D613, turn at the corner by the town hall and park near the small fountain (four to five spaces available). Alternatively, you can park next to the Grand Bassin on the avenue of the same name.

YellowPR® markings

(S/E) With your back to the fountain, take Avenue des Fossés, continue along Avenue du Grand Bassin then turn left onto Avenue de Jonquières (wooden sign on the wall to the left saying “Notre-Dame de Lère”). About a hundred metres further on, let the road veer off to the right and go straight on along Rue du Pech. Continue along this small road, ignoring the vineyard paths on either side.

(1) Just after a small concrete bridge and at a 90° left-hand bend, leave the road and take the narrow path opposite, slightly to the right, which runs between two vineyards. Cross a small stream (dry in September 2017), and follow a wider path to the right. At a short, partly concrete section, ignore the path leading straight ahead (dead end) and continue to the left. Cross through a lovely pine grove and emerge onto a wide tarmac track.

(2) Turn right, then immediately turn left, leaving the buildings of the Cantéric dairy farm on your right.
Continue along a small tarmac road which gives way to a wide, passable dirt track that winds almost flatly, offering lovely views to the right over a valley planted with vines. Ignore the paths on either side and reach a large junction.

(3) Head left and enter the cluster of trees sheltering the Cabane de Loulou. After a short stop to read the touching little plaque celebrating the work that draught horses once carried out in the vineyards, turn back to return to the wide track and continue to the right.

Cross the last vineyard plot lengthwise, passing between two rows of vines, and reach the large polished stone slabs that form the bed of the Nielle, which is completely dry. Walk onto these slabs and turn left to reach the Gourg Goutonniet, which you overlook by a few metres (be careful of potential falls as there is no protection at this point).

(4) Take in the view, then head back along the slabs to spot, on the right, the narrow path climbing between the pines. After a few fairly steep hairpin bends, pass the secured viewpoint over the gourg and emerge onto a wide, stony track. Turn right and begin a steady, gentle climb.

(5) About 350 m further on, at the edge of a pine grove, leave this wide track and take a narrower path that starts on the right. This path crosses a landscape where heath and pine trees create a very pretty scene and, after a short descent, joins a wide track.

(6) Turn right and you will soon reach the large crossroads of tracks at the Col de Salles.

No signposting

(7) Turn right, then at the junction about a hundred metres further on, continue left and you’ll soon reach another junction.

(8) Turn left. When you reach a vineyard, veer right to follow its northern edge and finish skirting it by turning south. Shortly afterwards, ignore a path branching off to the left, pass by the Notre-Dame dairy farm and reach the junction with a track situated about fifty metres from the Notre-Dame de Lère Chapel (spelled l'Aire on the IGN map), which stands in a secluded spot, like a sentinel watching over the rows of vines that surround it.

YellowPR® signposting

(9) Turn left to reach the chapel, then retrace your steps.

(9) Head straight on and stay on the wide main path, ignoring the various turnings to the left and right.

(1) Go straight on and retrace your steps in the opposite direction to return to the fountain at the start (S/E).

Hiking boots recommended.

Worth a visit

Gourg Goutonniet.

This magnificent pool, usually crystal-clear, has suffered from the persistent drought, resulting in murkier water which, unfortunately, is not really suitable for swimming (as of September 2017). But the site has retained all its charm.

We went for a walk in the afternoon in very windy conditions. The trails are very varied and take us through heaths, pine forests and huts, including ‘Loulou’s’, which is well worth a visit for its plaque paying tribute to draught horses. At this time of year there wasn’t a single flower to be seen, whereas the same route in June was ablaze with blooms. It’s a truly magnificent botanical garden all along the walk. At the end of the route, stop off at the Chapelle de l’Aire. This beautifully restored monument is an absolute must-see.
This route is perfect for a half-day outing. Note that at this time of year there was no water in the bed of the Nielle.

A hike enjoyed in perfect weather. The River Nielle at Gourg Goutonnier is completely dry.
The signposting is easy to follow.

An easy walk, a lovely picnic at Le Gourg, a peaceful atmosphere.
We did it in the opposite direction.

For me, there are too many tracks and too many vineyard paths, but the destination – the Gourg – is definitely worth the effort.
A note regarding the route: it is no longer possible to pass “right past” the Cantéric dairy farm as the path is now “private”. It is therefore impossible to see the buildings. You simply stay on the track and you’ll easily find your way back onto the route.

An easy route with a few lovely little paths through woodland and heath, and of course the Gourg Goutonniet, which is well worth a look. The return route, however, is rather dull as it follows a track.

There is a pitfall on this walk because, although the route is signposted, there is another walk – "the postman’s walk" – whose signposts overlap. The route description does not provide sufficient warning.
First point at the Cantèric dairy farm, where the description should say “turn right then IMMEDIATELY left
Second point at Loulou’s hut: retrace your steps slightly and continue immediately to the right.
We went quite a long way off course and ended up walking 15km instead of the planned 8km.
We did this walk on a very hot day and found it quite a struggle as there are many sections through vineyards.
The River La Nielle is completely dry, though the stream is still full of water with a few frogs, dragonflies and water snakes... but it’s a rather lifeless spot; it must be quite different to see during the wet season.
