Car park near the water tower, at a place called Sur les Côtes, at the end of Rue des Mailleux, 1.8 km from Charmoille church, before the hamlet of Le Chaufaud. Yellow and blue markings. Some sections are unmarked.
(S/E) A beautiful view of the Belleherbe valley. Take the small tarmac road past the reservoir. At the first fork, continue straight on along Rue des Sapins. Recent deforestation offers a beautiful view of the Dessoubre valley.
(1) At the end of the hamlet, on the right, there is a last house with picturesque wooden statues. On one of my visits, the owner kindly showed me around his barn where he exhibits his works. Go down to the left towards Creux de Hauteroche (Route du Belvédère). Soon on the left, there is a magnificent view of the valley and the mountains surrounding the Dessoubre. Return to the previous crossroads.
(1) Continue to the left. Just before the end of the pine forest, take the path on the left, then left again at the small tarmac road. Continue for about 100 metres.
(2) Turn right onto the gravel road. Soon, leave a path on your right and continue along this beautiful gravel road. A little further down, you will find the signposting at a fork. Continue straight downhill. When the path makes a sharp right turn, leave it and turn left onto the forest path towards Charmoille. Descend into the beautiful little canyon of Creux de Hauteroche.
(3) At the foot of the steps, make a short detour of about 50 metres to the right to a small (unprotected) promontory offering a view of Rosureux. Return to the gorge to reach the viewpoint over the Dessoubre valley. Picnic tables. Leave the viewpoint via the path that runs alongside the barriers. Follow the small tarmac road to the right and you will soon reach a fork.
(4) Turn right, then immediately right again onto the gravel path.
Be careful! When the path turns left and loses its nice gravel surface as it begins to descend, ignore the turn-off to the right and continue straight ahead. Quickly leave the wide gravel path that climbs to the left and continue straight ahead on the trail.
(5): Quickly, at the fork in the trail marked by a signpost, descend the steep path on the right, using the helpful handrail, towards Belleherbe. Turn left onto the wider forest path.
(6) You will come to a large, beautiful rock in a semicircle that can be used as a shelter. After visiting it, return to the path and continue climbing, enjoying occasional beautiful views of the valley between the trees.
(7) At the top, at forest signpost no. 12, ignore the signposting that goes off to the right, but continue along the small stony road that turns sharply to the left. When it reaches a plateau, you will come to a first fork. Continue straight ahead, leaving the path that descends to the left. Then continue straight ahead at the second fork, this time leaving the path that climbs to the right. You will soon come to the reservoir (S/E).
