Description of the walk

Parking at the Pederü refuge car park, Strada Val dai Tamersc.

(S/E) From the car park, walk past the refuge on the left and head towards the wooden gate where there is an information board. Head towards Fanes via trail no. 7. This takes you straight across the field towards a small wooden bridge spanning the stream.

(1) Just after the bridge, take the path furthest to the left. The path then joins a wider track.
Continue straight on, crossing the track. The path climbs through low pine trees and joins the track once more.

(2) Then take the path on the right towards Fanes on trail no. 7. It continues uphill before descending back towards the track.

(3) At the junction with the track, continue to the right on trail no. 7 towards Fanes (2 signs a few metres apart). The trail climbs to the right through the forest before joining the track, which you follow for a few dozen metres.

(4) At the junction, take the path on the right which leaves the track towards Fanes.

(5) When the path joins the track again, ignore the left-hand turn and continue westwards to rejoin the track at a Fork in the road.

(6) Continue straight on. After a left-hand bend, the path turns south and reaches the first chalet.
Continue along the track to the next chalet, “Ucia dles muntagnoles”. A few metres past the chalet, you will see signposts.

(7) Then turn right towards “Ücia Lavarella”, still on path no. 7.
After 10 minutes, you will reach the Lavarella refuge. Continue along the track that goes round the lake in front of the refuge towards “Levert”, which is indicated on signposts behind the official signs.
After a few hundred metres, a new signpost for “Lé Vërt” appears on the towpath to the right.

(8) Take the almost invisible path to reach Lac Vert via trail no. 11A. Retrace your steps.

(8) Turn right onto the path that climbs through the forest towards “Ju de Limo” via trail no. 11A. It then joins the track.

(9) Take the track to the right towards “Ju de Limo” via trail no. 11. You will see the Fanes refuge below on the left. After about 250 m, you will reach a crossroads.

(10) Continue along path no. 11 to Lac de Limo, which you can walk around.

(11) For the return journey, whichever route you take will lead you back to the Pederu refuge; you have the choice:
- take the route you came on;
- take the track that descends to the Pederu refuge (there may be small paths branching off the track and rejoining it a few dozen metres further down, which shortens the return journey as indicated below).

(10) Continue along the track for a few metres until you find a path on the left. It crosses the track twice to take you close to the Fanes refuge.

(12) Return to the track leading to the Chalet Ucia dles Muntagnoles.

(7) Continue north on the track, which turns east after the right-hand bend and reaches the Fork in the road.

(6) If you choose the alternative route, turn right. Your route will then pass to the south of the path taken on the way out.

(3) This same route takes you close to Lago Picodel.

(2) Turn right to pass close to the waterfalls after a few hairpin bends. Then follow the track northwards to reach the bridge and the car park at the Pederu Refuge (S/E).

Personally, I’m disappointed.
Up to point 6, the environment isn’t at all pleasant.
In fact, you have two options:
Either you head straight up through a sort of pine forest of fir trees about a metre high. There isn’t much shade and it is actually quite steep. It isn’t very pretty. The trunks are black and look burnt.
Or you can take the forest track that winds its way up and cuts across the direct path in several places. The first track is very wide to allow cars (even saloons) to reach the hotels at the bottom of the valley, further up. This track was cleared without much care and the vegetation was cut down in a hurry, left lying by the side. It looks as though the path has been cleared by a bulldozer. It’s still quite steep but can be tackled by mountain bikes without any trouble. So you won’t be alone at all; families make their way up this path.
In both cases, the ground consists of white limestone. As you’re heading due south, it’s scorching hot throughout the climb up to point 6.
After that, you do indeed find yourself in a valley that gradually becomes greener. However, the meadows are stony, so don’t expect to see those lovely green meadows you passed by car on your way to the starting point.
The last lake is of no particular interest. The views throughout the hike aren’t on a par with what you’d find in the Dolomites. I’m not a big fan of steep-sided valleys, which might explain that.
I think there are better things to do in the Dolomites, especially as the car journey to the starting point (the refuge/hotel-restaurant) costs €12.

Wow, what a lovely hike. The start is quite steep, with a good climb that alternates between scree and forest, then you reach the first mountain pasture and it’s breathtaking. The vegetation is lush and green, the water flows freely – a complete contrast to the start.
We then carried on to the two mountain huts before finally heading to the last little lake on the route – a few extra kilometres but well worth it. A 5-hour 45-minute hike, including a stop for a beer at the hut and a picnic by the river. A really lovely time. The weather was on my side, as after a few days of rain, I was treated to a big blue sky.
Highly recommended if you’re in the area.

One of the most beautiful hikes I went on during my trip to the Italian Dolomites.
The drive to the Pederu refuge alone is worth it. But once you’ve parked and taken in the view, it’s absolutely breathtaking! Surrounded by mountains in a nearly 360° panorama, it’s magical.
The hike is varied, and the valley and lakes are stunning. Brilliant.
