The Paaskula bog

This route, easily accessible from Tallinn by public transport, allows you to visit a beautiful peat bog that is ultimately not very frequented. The description draws attention to the deterioration of part of the route and allows you to avoid it. Trying to force your way through would certainly be very dangerous. This is an easy hike if you follow this description, but it cannot be done without walking through water up to your calves for a few hundred metres.

Description of the walk

The suggested starting point is the Kaare stop on Tallinn's public bus line 18. This means that it is possible to do this walk without a vehicle.

(S/E) Head west and take the first street on the left. Continue straight ahead until you reach the intersection near the polyclinic.

(1) Turn left and enter the forest, continuing to the end of the road. You will reach a car park, which can be used as an alternative starting point if you have a vehicle.

(2) Follow the path that plunges into the forest towards the south and continues along the road you have been following. When the path enters the bog, it becomes a well-maintained wooden walkway that avoids walking on the wet ground and crosses a few wooden bridges. There is also a map with the paths marked. The suggested route is a combination of the red and green routes and starts on the red trail.

(3) The route here suggests a short detour to the right along a stream. This is optional, of course, but it's an invitation to explore! In fact, there are plenty of opportunities like this along the way to stray a few metres from the main path and cautiously explore the less developed natural surroundings. Don't miss out! You will come to the junction between the red route, which continues almost straight ahead, and the green route, which you will take to return.

(4) Keep right on the red trail over wooden footbridges.

(5) Turn left onto a "real path" that heads north and leads to an intersection.

(6) Leave the red route and follow the green route on the right. Pass a car park (another access point to the peat bog) and follow a small road for a few hundred metres. Look out for the green sign on the left indicating that you should leave the road.

(7) Turn left to rejoin the path.

(8) At this point, the path becomes flooded and you will need to walk through the water. It is safe, you will just get your feet wet. Continue to the intersection: see the Practical Information section.

(9) Continue straight ahead and stay on the path marked in green. Leave the flooded area quickly and continue on the route, which then becomes quite easy again. You will come to an intersection that you passed on the way there.

(4) Turn right and follow the same route you took on the way there until you reach the bus stop (S/E).

Notes

Bus 18 is a city bus that runs frequently (about every 15 minutes). You can catch it in the centre, towards Viru.

Do not underestimate the danger of the bog where the red route becomes impassable. The area is unstable and there is a high risk of falling into the water, which is dangerous. At the point (9), abandon the red route and stay safe.

With children, the flooded area after the point (8) may be problematic. It is preferable to make a simple return trip, for example to the point (6).

(9) Caution: this is a very tricky spot if you take the red route at this point. You need to keep to the right and walk along a wooden footbridge, which is comfortable for a few metres but then becomes unstable and floats, sinking dangerously when you walk on it. You then come to a small collapsed bridge, which capsizes as soon as you step on it. The bog here is deep and probably has an unstable bottom. It would therefore be extremely dangerous to try to cross: the red route has become completely impassable.

Worth a visit

The interest of the circuit lies in discovering this unique natural environment typical of Estonia: a large, partially flooded bog. Characteristic flora and fauna.
