A challenging hike to the Tête du Douard and its cross, offering a magnificent 360° panorama, then on to the Gorges de la Petite Sainte-Baume, with its lush vegetation and imposing limestone rocks, which you can climb amid the sharp limestone pavement, then discover two caves. A spectacular landscape.

Description of the walk

Park in front of the Domaine du Gem in Gémenos, on the edge of the D8N, at the intersection between the D8N and the D396.

(S/E) Head east to take the GC103 trail, which climbs southwards to the left of an abandoned building. You will come to a Y-junction.

(1) Turn right onto the GC224 trail. Continue for 270 metres, then keep left, heading west, at the next Y-junction. The trail climbs steadily with some steep, concrete sections. You will come to a Y-junction.

(2) Keep right to make a round trip to cistern no. 408, where you can admire the landscape of the Gémenos valley and Sainte-Baume with the Pic de Bertagne.

(2) On the way back, continue to the right. Walk for about 150 metres and look for a trailhead on the right.

(3) Turn onto this narrow path which climbs through vegetation that is sometimes overgrown. You will see the cliffs of Le Douard. You will come to a T-junction.

(4) Turn left, then 20 metres further on, turn right onto a stony path (red dot on a tree) which goes around the cliffs on the right. You will arrive at a secondary summit. Then turn right towards the summit of Douard, crossing the sharp limestone pavement and following the numerous cairns. Admire the landscape.

(5) Look for three cairns in a triangle that indicate, on the left, the direction of the Gouffre du Douard, a few metres below in the vegetation. Shortly afterwards, you will arrive at the Tête du Douard and its cross (elevation 495). Admire the 360° panorama.
Descend westwards on a faint trail, which is difficult to spot at first, but look out for a large cairn in the distance indicating the direction to follow. You will arrive at a large rock with a red mark.

(6) Pass to the left of the rock, then turn left onto a stony descent. You will come to a junction with a path to follow on the left, heading east. The path passes through the undergrowth, then along the edge of the cliffs before turning right and joining a track lower down at an elevation of 350 metres.

(7) Turn right and follow the path that descends to the left of the track. You will come to a junction with several paths and a well.

(8) Follow thefirst path to the right of the well. After climbing through the woods, you will come to a large track. Follow it to the left, heading south-east then east.

(9) Leave the track on the right and take a path that leads into increasingly dense vegetation. Walk for about 200 metres, then turn left to climb higher and see the large limestone block characteristic of the Petite Sainte-Baume gorges with its two pine trees planted at the top on your right. Then turn right, near elevation 379, to enter the heart of the gorges.

(10) Look for a cairn on the right indicating the path that leads to a rocky outcrop, which you must climb over to reach the top of the limestone block in the middle of the sharp limestone pavement. Retrace your steps.

(11) Look for a cairn on the right indicating the direction to follow to reach two narrow but deep caves. Retrace your steps and continue eastwards, passing an old lime kiln and following the path that joins a track further down.

(12) Turn right onto the track and you will come to a crossroads with several paths and a yellow gas pipe post.

(13) Pass to the left of the pole and follow the path opposite, which joins a DFCI track further down.

(14) Turn left onto the track, arrive at a Y-junction, and turn right to follow track GC103.
Pass a fire hydrant at elevation 180, then, after a series of sharp turns, you will return to the junction you passed on the way there.

(1) Turn right and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

For information: the author's time for this route was 4 hours (excluding breaks).

Long clothing is recommended for certain sections on narrow paths lined with thorny bushes.

This hike is classified as difficult due to the numerous changes in elevation, the rocks to be crossed to reach the summit of Douard and the ascent of the limestone block of the Gorges de la Petite Sainte-Baume.

As this route is not very well marked, the numerous cairns make it easier to find your way, particularly in the scree slopes of the Tête du Douard; the Petite Ste Baume gorges are spectacular and well worth a detour.
A wonderful discovery thanks to the excellent description!

A lovely, fairly challenging hike with multiple trails that are very overgrown with prickly vegetation at times (long trousers recommended) from point 3 onwards, but with beautiful views all along the route (the summit of the Tête du Drouard, the peaks of the gorges, which are superb, especially one of the narrow caves). Bring a headlamp. The Visorando app was also useful for confirming the route, which was well marked.

We enjoyed this lovely hike for its beautiful views and varied paths, sometimes very overgrown with prickly vegetation and sometimes wide or in the undergrowth. We climbed the two peaks, which made the outing a bit more challenging. Unfortunately, we didn't find the caves. We'll have to do it again.

Be sure-footed and wear good shoes (preferably high-top) because the path to Tête du Douard is rocky. You will also need the Visorando app to find the trail.

In addition, the paths are sometimes very narrow with kermes oak trees (do not wear shorts, and it is probably not advisable for children who, given their height, would end up badly scratched).

The bonus: at the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of Garlaban, Sainte-Victoire and Pic de Bertagne all at once.

An interesting hike to a viewpoint I didn't know.
Lots of rocks, as expected, but the vegetation is really very overgrown from point 3 onwards, making walking very difficult and unpleasant. There is a risk that, if not maintained (by whom?), this part of the trail will quickly become impassable.

-To justify my "average" rating for ease of following the route: there are many cairns, which can sometimes be annoying.

-We missed the fork at point 3, which took us to point 7. There, we decided to continue by taking the route backwards to the Tête du Douart. At point 4, we descended back to 7 via a steep descent to resume the route in the right direction.

-We searched hard for the chasm, but after persisting, we found it. It is true that it is small and well hidden, and there is still the problem of cairns everywhere.

-The Petite Baume gorges are really worth seeing. We climbed the two boulders, each marked by a cairn on the right (point 10). The one marked on the map is the second, lowest one.

-We also found the caves. You have to enter the large fault to discover a narrow and very steep passage on the right (14 metres high). This whole area is superb!

-Don't miss the old lime kiln, which is fairly well preserved.

-Three large groups of hikers were also on the trail, and other hikers were near the gorges.
