Description of the walk

Car park near Col des Ayes on the D479, about 150 m after the entrance to Chemin de Chalamand.

(S/E) Return to the pass and join theGR®42, which descends towards the Embroye stream via a path below the road. It joins the road after about 1.5 km.

(1) Follow it to the junction with the Route de la Seauve. Turn left towards La Seauve and continue to the Valette bridge.

(2) Just before the bridge, take the path on the right that leads into the forest. Follow it until you reach the Route de la Seauve at a place called Gatou.

(3) Turn left along the Route de la Seauve and follow it to the first junction. Turn right onto the path that climbs uphill and follow it to the signpost marked "Les Fauries".

(4) Turn right onto the path that descends towards L'Embroye. Stay on theGR® trail, keeping to the right at the crossroads, and after a left-hand bend followed by a right-hand bend, you will arrive at the Embroye stream.

(5) Ford the stream (see Practical Information) and climb up the path that passes below the hamlet of La Tour. Continue to the D279 road.

(6) Cross it and take the path that climbs opposite. Continue to Chemin des Bonnets de Lubac. Turn left, pass above the hamlet of Les Bonnets de Ladreyts and continue to the signpost "Les Bonnets de Ladreyt".

(7) Take the path opposite towards Les Illiers. At the fork, keep right and continue to the entrance to the hamlet.

(8) Turn right onto Chemin des Illiers (this is a tarmac section). Follow it to the junction with Route de Vernoux (signposted "Chemin des Illiers" at this point).

(9) Cross the Vernoux road and take the path that descends towards the Ruisseau des Ayes stream. At the stream, take the path that immediately climbs to the left and follow it until you reach the Col des Ayes car park (S/E).

At the end of the route at number 9: Take the road on the left, then go to the scrap metal dealer's, turn right through the gate and go down towards the stream, but do not cross it. Turn left and continue to Col des Ayes.

A lovely little Sunday hike, done in beautiful weather, without any particular difficulty, with pretty panoramic views
a few gaps in the description but easily "recoverable"
Ideal at the beginning or end of the season

Hike completed on a beautiful day with temperatures reaching 30°C...
I thought I would be hiking on small trails... But it was a marked trail, on wide paths, even tracks... I was a little disappointed about that (my pruning shears stayed in my bag). Still, there were beautiful, varied landscapes and stunning panoramic views...
The hike was very shaded until we reached the hamlet of Les Bonnets de Ladreyt. After that, it was much more exposed, but it was a slightly windy day, so it was bearable. The paths were in good condition (not too many stones).
Watch out for mountain bikers who ride like madmen and clearly don't give a damn about hikers...
The group was delighted with this hike!

We did this route this morning, 10 August 2025. It was a beautiful hike, with a few minor issues to report. The section after point 5, below the hamlet of La Tour, remains tricky, with lots of brambles and no maintenance of the trail. Then, at point 9, the track to take is very dangerous. Continue for 50 m to the left and take the track in the middle of the scrapyard, which is easier.
Otherwise, everything is fine

A very pleasant walk without any great difficulty. Very few tarmac roads, lots of undergrowth, particularly in the chestnut trees, but still with some lovely views.

Hike completed on 18/07 but starting opposite Toulaud town hall, then taking the GR 42 to reach the starting point. In total, 16.3 km and 600+ metres of elevation gain.
A large part of the route is in the shade, which is very pleasant at this time of year. The final section is a little more sunny, but nothing too bad.
A very pleasant route with beautiful scenery towards the Vercors and Ardèche.
There are a few sections on tarmac, but they are quite rare.

A great discovery, a varied route that is very pleasant in hot weather as it is often shaded. I would happily do it again.
