Description of the walk

When you arrive at the village of Roche-Saint-Secret Béconne, park in the large car park very close to the church, at the foot of the community hall.

(S/E) Head downhill, cross the road to Dieulefit and turn right, walking through the village. Take the small tarmac road, Chemin d’Alençon, on the left, and cross the River Lez.

(1) Immediately after the bridge, take the path on the right running alongside the River Lez, and continue until you reach the Château d’Alençon.

(2) Turn right onto the small road, ignoring a road on the left.

(3) Leave the road and take the path on the left, continuing uphill. You can get closer to the ruins of the Tour d’Alençon by climbing up to your left.

(4) Shortly afterwards, turn right onto the narrow path marked in yellow; take care not to slip in places. You can take a short break by the banks of the Lez, as the path runs alongside it.

(5) At the Combe du Four, turn right and stay on the path; cross the small road and go behind Les Fonds, cross the Combe Martin, then the Combe Méjoun, and rejoin the banks of the Lez.

(6) Take the tarmac road on the right, cross the bridge over the Lez and rejoin the road to Dieulefit. Follow it to the right for a few hundred metres, cross the bridge and continue for 50 metres.

(7) Take the path on the left to join the GR®.

(8) Follow it to the right. At the junction, go straight on to visit the ruins of the old village of Béconne.

(9) Retrace your steps and turn right at the Y-junction. You’ll come to a road, the D545.

(10) Turn right and stay on the D545, passing the old Beconne town hall, then carry on.

(11) Leave the tarmac road and take the path on your left, which is marked with a yellow line. Stay on this PR® trail.

(12) Turn left to stay on thePR®, walk alongside the lavender fields, keeping to the edge of the copse. Stay on this path until you reach the Chemin du Rastelet. Turn right, head down towards the village, and reach the car park (S/E).

Very well laid out, simpler than the old route which has been removed from the website. If you follow the GPS route, you’ll have no problems – do make sure to check out the ruins of the houses beneath the tower. A few slippery sections on the descents. Very busy, with lots of dogs, both on and off the lead.

A lovely autumn route, with the vines turning red. Good description, but
- you can
After the car park at the Alençon tower, follow the track which climbs to the left, then pass beneath and to the right of the tower, which you can approach via a small ridge path leading off to the rear
- after the tower, rejoin the track that climbs and turns right further up, and look for a signpost on the left amongst the broom, marking the start
of a narrow path marked with yellow signs
- the descent to the right through the marl and strata is slippery – thank goodness for the walking poles; you lose sight of the yellow markings for a while, then you come to the Lez.
Before reaching marker 5, leave the Lez – does the path disappear? You need to go over the top of the vineyards
At marker 12, the path on the left running alongside the vineyard isn’t very obvious; go to the right of the hedge to find the PR
__In fact, the GPS proved very useful. A lovely route.
