Punta San Sisto from Appietto

A very beautiful hike a few kilometres from Ajaccio with magnificent views of the surrounding gulfs and peaks. This walk combines part of the PR® trail between Appietto and Calcatoggio, a magnificent walk along the ridges and numerous points of interest such as the ruins of an old chapel, a dolmen and a stone castle!

Description of the walk

Park in the car park in the centre of Appietto.

(S/E) Walk past the town hall. Before reaching the cul-de-sac, turn right and walk up towards the house with a tower. Continue to the end of the tarmac road.

(1) Go through the metal gate and join the PR® trail marked in yellow. The climb is steep up to Bocca di Capannella (653 m), where you can enjoy a beautiful 360° view of the gulfs of Ajaccio, Lava and Sagone.

(2)Turn right and follow the ridge to Bocca à Croce (679 m): superb panoramic views all along the way, with the Monte Cinto massif in the background.

(3)Leave the PR® trail, which descends to the left towards Calcatoggio, and continue along the ridge towards Punta San Sisto, now on a gently sloping path that winds between the rocks.

(4) Continue along the ridges, leaving a path on the right. Just before the summit, discover the ruins of an old chapel. Reach PuntaSan Sisto (876 m), marked by a small wooden cross surrounded by rocks.

(5) Continue along the ridge. About 300 metres further on, a small path descends about 20 metres to the right to a dolmen that is worth a detour.

(6) Turn back and take the ridge path on the right.

(7) Cross the path on the right, which will be the descent route . Continue straight ahead for a few hundred metres towards the stone castle, visible as you emerge from a pretty woodland area, following the cairns.

(8) Turnaround at the castle and its stone wall (watchtower?) and return to the fork.

(7) Descend to the left along the easy sloping path and join a marked trail.

(9) Follow it straight ahead to reach Bocca à Foce, where you will find the path down to Punta Curbajola and Punta Pastinaca.

(10) Turn right, keeping to the marked path, and you will arrive at a three-way junction.

(11) Leave the PR® by turning left onto a path that becomes a track at the first houses. At the crossroads, turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Currently little known, the path is quite narrow in places and congested, especially for bare legs.

Variants

(7) You can also return via Punta San Sisto at (4) and turn left for a direct descent to Bocca a Foce (10).

(11)You can choose to continue along the PR® trail, which rejoins the starting point, where you should turn left towards the town hall and the car park.

Worth a visit

Beyond the superb route along the ridges, another interesting feature of this walk is the opportunity to discover numerous curiosities such as the ruins of an old chapel, rocks of various shapes, a dolmen and, finally, the ultimate destination, a stone castle!

A lovely walk. On the way back, the path is well overgrown, so don’t hesitate to follow the clearly marked trail.

Trip taken in December 2025. Superb route, with breathtaking views. Only the trail leading to the castle ( more like a tower) is not very visible and requires crossing a forest worthy of Tolkien!
Well worth discovering!
