Park at the Cale de la Porte de Dinan.
(S/E) From the Cale de la Porte de Dinan, go round the ramparts to the right and head towards the Tourist Office, then take the Chaussée du Sillon, Saint-Malo’s legendary thoroughfare which runs alongside the main beach, characterised by the forest of tree trunks that protects it from storms.
(1) Depending on the tide, you can leave the Chaussée du Sillon and head down to the beach to continue directly towards Pointe de la Varde. You’ll pass by the surf and sand yachting school.
(2) In front of Pointe de Rochebonne, you will need to go round the rocks, and you may need to take your shoes off for a few dozen metres. Continue along the beach to reach the Minihic slipway and the GRP®®trail.
(3) To the left of the slipway, take the stone steps marking the GRP®® path. This will lead you to Pointe de la Varde.
(4) Access to the site and movement on the headland are restricted due to the risk of rockfalls. The well-marked path allows you to walk around it and admire the panoramic view across the whole of Saint-Malo Bay: the islets that emerge at low tide, the forts, and you may even catch a glimpse of the Chausey Islands. The headland was fortified by the Germans during the last war; only a few remains of blockhouses are visible: a firing post and a machine-gun turret.
(5) The return journey follows the same route as the outward journey, passing at the foot of Fort National. You enter the walled city through the Porte Saint-Thomas. Head towards the Porte de Dinan, through the centre of the city, taking in turn: Place Chateaubriand, Rue J. Cartier, Rue des Cordiers, and Rue d’Asfeld to emerge onto the ramparts and return to the Porte de Dinan (S/E).
