Description of the walk

Park your car in La Joux car park (S). La Joux is a hamlet to the south of La Tuile, a village located at the foot of the Great St Bernard Pass.

Take a left after the car park to the Alta Via Trek. Yellow triangle waymarks with the number 2 in the middle (called Via alta n°2) can be found all along the route.

(1) Take the path and after a sharp turn right and a stream you'll reach the Via alta n°2 trail.

Head due south up a pleasant windy path reaching beautiful waterfalls bordering the trail (2). Go back to the path heading slightly downhill to the alpine pasture and Parcet Chalet (3), and head uphill on the other side.

After a few bends you'll reach Plan de la Liere (4). Shortly after, exit the forest and enter the alpine pasture. Get to Col de la Dignité then, on a pleasant slope you'll reach Deffeyes Shelter on the edge of Ruitor Lake.

Practical information

Lots of water spots along the way, it might be a good idea to purify it before drinking.
Deffeyes Shelter marks the end of this first stage.

In the nearby area

A magnificent waterfall, especially the last one which happily splashes hikers who get to close to take a picture.
The shelter is a nice stopover but the dormitories are big.

A fine route, with a steep climb from the Lac du Glacier.
The option of descending from Lac du Glacier to La Joux is very pleasant.

The many splendid walks starting from the refuge make it advisable to stay there for several nights. Note the availability and kindness of the refuge team.

Hello Bernardi,
This route corresponds to part of my hike. From the refuge, I headed for the Bellacomba lakes to do a magnificent loop that I'll be describing very soon.

Just one comment in your description:

Park at the large car park at La Joux (D). La Joux is a hamlet south of La Thuile, a village at the foot of the Col du Grand Saint-Bernard.

It is not the Col du Grand Saint-Bernard, but the Col du Petit Saint-Bernard (Piccolo San Bernardino).
Yours faithfully
Dominique

A 2-day hike with family and friends, including an overnight stay at the refuge.
We can't park at the junction because the road is closed between 08:00 and 18:00.
This adds a good 15 minutes.
The climb up to the waterfalls was a bit crowded, but then it calmed down.
We took our lunch break at the glacier lake. It was a bit hard to get back going after that as there was still 400 m to climb.
Nice night at the refuge on a half-board basis. The next day, we hiked via the lakes (green, grey, ruitor and Serac), although there wasn't much climbing, it was quite long and we had to be very careful of the kairns on the way down.
On the way back we had a drink at the buvette de la Joux, a place to be avoided: dirty, they don't want to speak French, the toilets don't work and the tables aren't cleared between customers.
One minor disappointment was that, despite the magnificent scenery, we didn't see any animals (just one marmot).
But there were plenty of blueberries :-)

It's a tough climb, but the views are worth the effort! The refuge at the finish offers welcome refreshments to thirsty hikers. A very fine day.

Steep ascent, but at least the difference in altitude is swallowed up quickly.
1st section in undergrowth with waterfalls and splendid views of Mont Blanc. Large jorasses.
From the refuge you can easily reach the Alto Passo pass, where you can see the Gd Combin, the Matterhorn and Mont Rose. You can return to the refuge via the Vallon des Lacs, a parish specific to Brittany, with no footpaths and cairns to follow.
