The Dent du Chat from the Relais des Aigles

Ascent to the Dent du Chat from the Relais des Aigles. Splendid views, with 90 per cent of the walk taking place in the shade amongst the trees. Along the way, you’ll come across giant anthills shaped like large piles of fir needles, magnificent vegetation and plenty of butterflies and bumblebees. On arrival, there’s a superb view of Lake Bourget, with – in season – numerous paragliders flying overhead.

Description of the walk

Park at the Relais des Aigles: there’s a large car park with free parking.

(S/E) With your back to the mast, head left onto the path. Pass under the treetop adventure course, then walk past another mast until you reach a junction.

(1) Leave the path that descends steeply to the right towards Le Bourget-du-Lac and continue straight on to Le Molard Noir: panoramic views and an orientation board.

(2) Pass over slippery rocks secured by cables, then turn right to cross another secured section and reach a junction.

(3) Turn left, walk along the hillside beneath the Petite Dent and cross another section secured by a cable before reaching a junction of paths.

(4) Continue straight on to reach the ladder section.

(5) Climb these ladders, which are of a normal incline and secured by a cable and several anchor points in the rock, to reach a rocky platform. Continue by climbing further ladders, then follow a rocky path to a wooden barrier. Finish with a final steep climb using the cable to reach the summit of the Dent du Chat.

(6) Enjoy the exceptional views, then head back down via the same route to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Difficult hike: sections with cables and ladders. The rocks are slippery and the final climb using the cable is steep.

On the way back, you can enjoy a platter of appetisers at the Relais des Aigles with a lovely view.

Good walking boots are essential, especially for the cable section where the rocks are very slippery.

Worth a visit

Molard Noir viewpoint with an orientation board.

Stunning views from the Dent du Chat, a small tree-branch hut along the route, dome-shaped anthills, flowers, butterflies, bumblebees, etc.
