The Saubajot Ridge from the Col d'Aran

Easy hike to the Col d'Aran and the famous rock of the same name. And if snow prevents you from reaching the rock, walk along the ridge to the east and enjoy a very pretty view.

Description of the walk

When you reach the Chapel of Houndas, take the road on the left and continue for about 600 metres until you reach a small car park on the right.

(S/E) Take the tarmac road and continue straight ahead. Near a fountain, you will reach the crossroads of the path in a hairpin bend.

(1) Take the dirt and stone path opposite, leaving the road on your right. Join it again further up.

(2) Follow the stony road and reach the junction with the path that cuts across the bends in the road.

(3) Continue along the road, note the signpost for Cabane Lasbordes, then come out onto the small plateau (altitude 1,329 m). Continue for another hundred metres or so along the stony path and then take the trail that leads to the Col d'Aran. A few cairns help you to follow this fairly well-marked trail. You will reach the foot of the pass.

(4) Note: Col d'Aran is only 200 metres away, but there is still snow on the ground on 10 May 2018. Change the route around the pass by going around the hill on the right to reach Crête de Saubajot via an easy route.

(5) Return via the same route to the trail junction.

(3) Keep right, taking the yellow-marked trail that rejoins the road further down.

(2) Then follow the same route as on the way out to return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The view from the ridges is magnificent:

- to the north, a bird's eye view of the Benou Plateau,
- to the east and south, the Pyrenees mountain range.

Very beautiful hike, well marked.
Slightly steeper at the end of the route. Superb 360° views at the finish.

A pleasant hike, but we couldn't find the path to the pass from the Lasbordes hut. However, we enjoyed the woods and pastures. We took mountain bike trails to descend, as the stony road is long.

This hike allowed us to discover another side of the Benou plateau.

Very beautiful hike without difficulty
Long, steady climb but not difficult
Very low clouds this morning with high humidity, but once we reached the Col d'Aran trail, the sky cleared
with magnificent views.
From the Saubajot ridges, the view is superb
It is possible to avoid most of the wide, stony track by taking the yellow-marked mountain bike trail up and down.

The hike is a walk, not a race

Enjoy the walk, everyone!

Parish specific to Brittany hike but with difficulty in marking/signage at the start...
So we went to the Col d'Aran, skipping the Saubajot ridge, and came back via the Sede de Pan ridge, which allowed us to make a circular descent via the Crambots hut.
There were few people before 10 a.m. (even though it was July) and the views were magnificent.
The climbs are a bit tough but not difficult.

The Saubajot ridge is accessible in its entirety both uphill and downhill, allowing you to complete a true route. From the Lasbordes hut, a well-marked trail heads north towards the pass where the ridge begins. It is of course preferable to take the ridge on the way up and descend via the route described in the guide. An interesting route for experienced hikers, with only a few cairns.
