The Côte Bleue seen from above from Sausset-les-Pins

This is a very pleasant hike, with around a third of the route along the coast, which is very relaxing. The rest of the route is on very passable paths. The elevation gain is very modest: 160 m over a distance of 13 km. There is just one slightly tricky section on rocks for about ten metres, but it's nothing too difficult. It is located in the highest part of the walk, dominated by a cross. There is a beautiful spot for a lunch break with a panoramic view of Sausset-les-Pins. The view is impressive on a clear day.

Description of the walk

As the hike starts at the seaside and is circular, you can park anywhere along the coast at the car park that suits you best.

(S/E) Take Quai du Port on the right, following the coast. Pass Avenue Simeon Goin to reach Route de la Couronne, which you should follow until you reach an opening in the safety barrier

(1) A pedestrian crossing allows you to cross the road and take the botanical path directly opposite, marked in yellow. You will come to a white forest barrier marked in yellow. There are also sky blue markers. This route is also called the "tourist route". Take the path on the left. After the wooden benches, there is a very clear view, but no panoramic view. Turn right.

(2) Pass under the railway line and the railway viaduct. Take the tarmac road that descends opposite, which is still marked in yellow and sky blue. Cross a tarmac road and continue straight ahead to pass under the Côte Bleue expressway, D9. You will come to a forest barrier.

(3) Do not take it, but stay on the right-hand side of the road until you reach a bend.

(4) At this hairpin bend on the Route Saint-Julien les Martigues D5, follow it on the right. Shortly afterwards, leave it at the bend near a rubbish bin on the left. The path is called CB107. It is a path that climbs to a forest barrier with cairns at the side of the path.

(5) At the crossroads, stay on the track on the right and continue a little further to another crossroads. Follow the path on the right that goes uphill. You will quickly come across a sky blue marker. Leave the track at a right-hand bend and take a small path opposite.

(6) At the fork, descend a few metres to the left and leave the track, almost in the middle of the first bend, to take the path on the left towards the mountain. Note a ruined stone house, then a second ruin a little further on.

(7) Leave the main path and turn right. This is a path that climbs uphill, and you can see the slope. Then leave the path and take another one on the right to reach an intersection with a double track. Take the track that climbs to the left to reach the top of the hill, a small mountain.

(8) You will arrive at the cross. This is the highest point of the hike, offering panoramic views of Sausset-les-Pins. It is an ideal spot for a picnic. The path begins to descend on the left, marked in sky blue. A small section of this path is on rock, which is a little steep for about ten metres. Continue until you turn right to pass under the motorway through a small tunnel.

(9) At the tunnel exit, cross a path and take the path opposite, which is still clearly marked in sky blue. Very quickly, you will come to another path, which you should take on the left, descending to pass another junction straight ahead. Stay on the main track, which descends and is again marked in sky blue and yellow.

(10) At the fork, leave the main track and turn right onto an equally wide track that descends, still marked in yellow and sky blue. Pass close to a dog training centre to arrive in front of a chain. Climb over it to reach the tarmac road.

(11) Follow it straight ahead, cross the railway line and you will now find yourself in Rue Lariand with the Résidence des Grillons on your left. Go down the road, continuing straight ahead to reach the seafront, which you should follow to the right. At the junction, turn left onto the Promenade de la Corniche and follow the coastline until you reach the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk – we really enjoyed it
The last part (the seaside) must be very busy in peak season, but we went in March and it was still brilliant
Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience
