The unmissable little Roman bridge at Senoueix

This tiny Roman bridge features on every postcard of the Creuse’s remarkable sites! The circular route therefore takes you there after a detour via Lake Lavaud Gelade, then back through meadows and young woodland. Although the walk begins with a short stretch of road (with little traffic), it then mainly follows paths and tracks lined with heather in bloom in autumn.

Description of the walk

Park in the centre of Saint-Marc-à-Loubaud.

Yellow markings

(S/E) Take the D59 (westbound) towards Lavaud Gelade and Cessinas for approximately 500m.

(1) Take the first small road on the left towards the hamlet of Cessinas. Drive through the hamlet and continue along the road.

(2) Pass the path on your left (which you will take later) and continue to the second junction where a sign reads “Dead end, this road does not lead to the lake”.

(3) Follow this dead-end road to the right, towards Lapléoux. Ignore the turn-off to Neypoux on the left and continue to Lapléoux.

(4) Just after the first house on the left with blue shutters and a yellow door, turn left. The small road turns into a track. Continue along this track to the lake (small beach, swimming possible in season).

(5) Turn around and head back along the small road you came along.

End of yellow markings

(3) Ignore the hamlet of Neypoux on the right. Do not follow the yellow markings any further! Return to the road towards Cessinas for about three hundred metres.

(2) Just after a left-hand bend, turn onto the first path on the right (there is a small granite cross that you’ll only notice if you look for it!). Follow the path across meadows and then through a small wood, straight ahead, until you reach the D16 road.

(6) Take the D16 to the right for 800m. The road is straight.

(7) At the first slight bend, keep right onto a path that bypasses the road. It leads back onto the D16; cross the road, continue for another 100m and turn left to reach the listed site of the small Roman bridge at Senoueix.

(8) Continue eastwards along the path that more or less follows the Thaurion. This path makes several right-angled bends. It crosses peat bog meadows.

(9) Cross two Canadian crossings (a sort of metal roller bridge). The grassy path climbs back up towards the forest. The path often stays at the edge of the forest. There is only this wide path, so it is impossible to go wrong.

(10) At the first junction, turn right at the pond (which you cannot see; ‘private property’ sign).

(11) At the crossroads, turn left. Head into the forest and go straight on. Ignore the paths on the left. Contrary to what is shown on the map, this is not a road, but a path that may have been tarmacked in the past.

(12) Continue slightly to the right.

(13) At the T-junction, take the right-hand track. The path crosses a recently planted forest of conifers and birches. You will see a yellow-orange marker (a single mark). The path leads onto the D59.

(14) Take the D59 to the left to reach Saint Marc-à-Loubaud (S/E).

if you want a circular that loops...
it was difficult to do without roads. But they are small roads (I didn't see any cars when I mapped out the route...)
I tried to work out this route many times, and finally settled on this one, which seemed to be the only possible option.
best regards,
mame Kiki

Far too much road for my liking. Nearly a third of the route.
Otherwise, the section (2 to 3 km) after the Roman bridge is simply magnificent.

Yes, it goes through without any trouble.
The two Canadian crossings are disused and can be bypassed via a path immediately to their left.
A motorhome was parked on the road just beyond the small bridge (about 800 m away?). I find it unacceptable that the road isn’t closed to traffic. All the more so as these motorhome owners had two large dogs running loose. For me, this is unacceptable because it’s a nature conservation area (peat bog, with a sign warning of ‘sheep grazing’).

I’m glad the section after the little bridge is still accessible and passable; it’s good to have some fresh news. The walk still forms a circular route! Thanks!

A lovely walk.
Lots of heather, various other flowers, and greenery that doesn’t seem to have suffered from this summer’s heatwave.
The round trip to the lake, which – judging by the map – seems like a bit of an oddity on the walk, is interesting. It’s a peninsula that isn’t covered by the path around Lake Lavaud Gelade.
My only regret was bringing my walking poles, as the terrain is very flat, with virtually no elevation changes, and includes a short stretch of road (with no traffic, but still a hard surface).

It really is a lovely walk, especially because of the variety of landscapes you pass through. It’s a bit of a maze, admittedly, with all the back-and-forth, but it’s interesting… and then that little bridge – what a treat…

A lovely walk with the chance to stop for a swim at La Vaud Gelade pond and dip your toes in the water near the little Roman bridge! It was very hot yesterday (over 30 degrees) but there was plenty of shade, so it was a pleasant walk. It took us 6 hours, including a long swim break!! Don’t forget to take plenty of water with you!

Glad you enjoyed it! We’ve been missing a walk that includes ‘the little bridge’. I spent a long time (and went round and round) working out this circular loop. Enjoy your future walks!

A lovely route. As well as the Senoueix bridge, you’ll come across a variety of landscapes: moorland, peat bogs…
Please note, you’ll need to use the map carefully as the signposts aren’t always sufficient. For example, there are two T-junctions.
The route took 3½ hours (including time spent consulting the map) for experienced walkers.
Thanks to the person who suggested this route... a little something extra for our region.
