L'entrée du tunnel du Roux en boucle depuis l'Air

Warning: do not attempt this hike until further notice (reopening scheduled for 2027)!
The Cévenol storm in October 2024 caused a landslide above the point (4), which completely destroyed the communal path. A municipal notice prohibiting passage has been posted. There is no alternative route on this part of the circuit.

A mid-season hike in spring or autumn starting from L'Air (or L'Herm), with varied landscapes and sections on quiet paved roads. Beautiful views of the Vauclare and Fontaulière valleys.

Description of the walk

The hike is marked in white and yellow throughout.
There are two car parks at L'Air, one near the old school and the other about a hundred metres further on coming from Montpezat. The description starts from the second car park.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the top of the hamlet until you pass the last house.

(1) At the hiking signpost, take the path on the right towards Le Roux. Follow this path uphill.

(2) When you reach the road, continue on the RD339 to the left, downhill towards Le Roux, which you will cross.

(3) A stony passage allows you to avoid following the hairpin bend. Pass in front of the town hall and the church

(4) At the hiking signpost, turn right onto Chemin de la Marugier,GR®®7. At the end, turn left onto the path going uphill (there is a street lamp carcass). Continue uphill, following the signs, passing two iron gates and a removable sheep fence.

(5) When you reach the D160 road, continue left on this road towards the Roux tunnel. Pass the Rieugrand hiking signpost, heading towards Mayres and the Chaumiène cross. Continue on the road until you reach the tunnel entrance.

(6) Turn left into the entrance between the safety walls and continue along the dirt track towards the 50m3 water reservoir. Continue for 2 km.

(7) At the hiking pole, turn left towards Le Roux, down a grassy path and go through a gate. Go through three hairpin bends.

(8) Watch out for the large white/yellow sign on a stone on the left of the path. This is the start of the path that passes above the house at a place called Chapelet. When you cross the stream, continue straight ahead (neither up nor down) on the less visible path, which is a little further on. Continue on the trail, which quickly becomes very visible, until you reach the entrance to Roux Bas and follow the upper road until you reach the road that descends from Roux (car park at the top).

(9) Turn right onto the road leading downhill. Pass the Roux Bas hiking signpost and continue towards Montpezat. Continue on the paved road until you reach L'Air (S/E).

Worth a visit

Le Roux: Romanesque church

Le Roux tunnel, a 3.3 km engineering structure on the unfinished Lalevade Le-Puy railway line

The Fontaulière Valley, a river over 20 km long that starts at Vestide-du-Pal (in the commune of Montpezat), passes through Le Roux, returns to Montpezat-sous-Bauzon and flows into the Ardèche at Pont-de-Labaume. Between Le Roux-Bas and L'Air, the river flows through deep gorges between chestnut forests on the right bank and bare, stony areas on the left bank.

Please note: at point 4, it is impossible to take the Marugier path: it is a private road (the owner has forbidden us to pass); leaving the village of Le Roux is a real headache; this hike is not recommended.

At 1, the path is very grassy and rarely used; when you reach the top near the road, you have to go under the retaining wall and climb up onto the road; if you do the circuit in the other direction, it is difficult to see where the path starts, but in this direction, you just have to climb up onto the road.
At 6, the path is the start of the railway ballast that was never completed, of which the Roux road tunnel is one of the most interesting conversions; but you can quickly see a trench on the right and the entrance and exit of a tunnel, which has collapsed inside.
At 7, at the hiking pole, I recommend making a round trip to the abandoned village of Vauclare by continuing along the path that branches off to the right for about 1 km: be sure to look out for the path on the left that immediately joins the old bridge and the abandoned village (probably dating from the 19th century). Return to point 7.
