By car: on the South Island, on the eastern outskirts of Owaka, turn right onto Main Road towards Jack's Bay, then right again onto Hina Hina Road, continuing towards Jack's Bay. Cross the bridge over Catlins River and continue left on the same road. Leave the road and turn right onto Jack's Bay Road and park at the end of the road.
(S/E) From the car park, follow the gravel path (south) indicated by a sign. Bordered by a hedge on the right, it climbs gently, offering beautiful views of Tuhawaiki Island and its inlet on the left. As you approach a bay, climb the long steps. Pass a high point where the view opens up onto the coast and the beaches below, then descend towards a wood. Move away from the coast and enter the small wood where you will come to a fork.
(1) Leave the path on the left, which you will return to in order to complete the loop around the abyss. Keep to the right and join a platform.
(2) From this vantage point, in good weather, you can see into the depths of the chasm, but this is not recommended during storms. Continue along the path on the opposite side of the karstic cave and return to the point (1), then retrace your steps back to the car park. (S/E)
