In the footsteps of the peasant miners of Guisane

The Briançonnais region had several hundred peasant-mines each operated by 2 to 3 people.
This route lets you access two of these sites in the Guisane valley. Here you can still find remnants of these operations.
It also offers stunning panoramic views of the Guisane valley and the Les Agneaux mountain. You can enjoy this in both summer and winter, with snowshoes (the southern exposure allows for rapid stabilisation of the snowpack).

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the bottom of the village of Freyssinet, on the edge of the D1091.

(S/E) Walk up the main street (Rue Sainte-Luce), in a north-easterly direction, pass the church and reach the top of the village.

(1) Take the Route de la Mine to the right, which quickly turns into a broad stony path. Walk up it until you get to a fork. Don't take the GR® parting to the left (signposted Puy Freyssinet) but continue on the main path which takes you east to the first mine.

(2) Step onto the mine's alluvial fan. To your left you can see the bricked-up entrance from the main gallery. There's a stunning panoramic view of the summit of Les Agneaux (right), the Dômes and the Col de Monétiers (left). Continue along the heap and at the end, take the path that climbs up to the left. Walk up through the mountain pastures (in a north-easterly direction) staying on the ridge overlooking the gorges of the stream. You'll arrive at the second mine.

(3) Cross the platform of the mine and join the trail that climbs from Serre-Barbin to Puy Freyssinet. Follow this down and after a rocky barrier, you come out by a small bridge over the river Roche Noire.

(4) Cross it and continue down the trail. Follow the marked trail in the direction of the village of Serre Barbin which you can see down below. When you get to the top of the village (water catchment) go down the street up to the fork.

Turn right (signposted "Au soleil de la Guisane") and follow the small Route du Freyssinet that leads back to the start point (S/E).

A very good route in sunshine and hard snow (-8°C) with a magnificent view of the surrounding area.
Avoid doing it without first doing some physical preparation.

Easy 2-hour walk. Interesting old mining sites. Can be done in summer or winter to warm up.

we did this walk on a snowy day and apart from the walled entrance to the mine, we didn't see anything else.
Despite everything, the scenery was magnificent, we were alone and sometimes without any tracks, and the hike was very enjoyable.
we thought we were lost for a while, until we found the little stone bridge that let us know we were on the right track.
Unfortunately, we didn't come across any animals, large or small.

Hello, I'm pleased that you've found in this hike the characteristics that my wife and I liked when it first opened: a certain wildness despite the proximity of the valley. It's a great place to make your own tracks.
The second mine is difficult to see in winter because the shaft has been filled in and the slag heap is covered in snow. It is located just before the crossing that leads to the stream (small bridge).
A little further up the puy Freyssinet (about 100 metres difference in altitude), there is a third, much larger mine with a clearly marked slag heap.
Sincerely

I took this walk on snowshoes. It was the middle of the February holidays and we were the first to set foot on the snow. What a joy to follow only the tracks left by the chamois....
On the other hand, we had a bit of trouble finding the second mine. With the snow, there was no visible path. By persevering, we finally found it. You just have to climb straight up.
The panorama is breathtaking. Barely 300 m as the crow flies from the hamlet of Freyssinet, you have the impression of being alone in the world. A nice, fairly easy walk. Thank you for your time.

Hello, my wife and I are the people behind this tour. Thank you for your comments. The 2nd mine is more discreet. The shaft has been filled in, and all that remains is the slag heap (which may have been covered in snow when you visited) and the remains of equipment: winch, props, etc. There is a 3rd, larger mine 100m higher up on the Puy Fressynet path.
Perhaps you saw some chamois? I forgot to mention in the guidebook that chamois were common on this route.

Hello,
We went on this hike with our family today, and everything went well except that we missed the second mine, so we just had to go under it and pick up the descent a little further down to reach the wooden bridge.

Otherwise, everything went very well. This is a very accessible hike for occasional hikers or even beginners, neither too long nor too short.

I have a few photos to post, but I don't know where...
