Hèvremont and the surrounding area

Between Limbourg and Goé, the small hamlet of Hèvremont marks the entrance to the wood of the same name. It will appeal to lovers of old buildings as well as walkers, who will enjoy the wooded surroundings and the view over the Bovegnée valley.
In the past, the inhabitants of Hèvremont, mostly farmers, spinners or weavers, were parishioners of Goé.

Description of the walk

Start from the TEC 724 Eupen/Verviers bus stop.

(S/E) Take the small path between the gardens to the side of the bus stop to reach a stile. Follow theGR® signposted route.
At the end of the small path, turn left

(1) Cross the Gileppe aqueduct. The aqueduct, situated along the Route de Goé, was built to supply Verviers with water from the Gileppe.

(2) At the top of the hill, turn right and head down the path.

(3) When you reach a large farm, turn immediately left and go through the gate. There is a lovely view of the village of Goé and its spiral bell tower, as well as the Hertogenwald Forest.
At the end of the path, follow the small road up to an electricity substation and turn right.

(4) Cross the road and take the path opposite. You can visit the old town of Limbourg.
At the Y-junction, turn left.

(5) View of the spot known as "Napoleon’s Nose" in the Bilstain woods. At the end of the path, turn left uphill between the meadows.

(6) To the right, superb view of Stembert and Verviers. Continue along the path.

(7) Walk past the pretty Comagnes farm to reach the Hèvremont-Limbourg road.

(8) When you reach the little Saint-Anne Chapel, head down to the right along the road for about 300m and leave the road via the small dirt track on the right. Continue to the junction and turn right. At the end of the track, cross the road linking Stembert to Hèvremont, then head towards the small path opposite to reach the hamlet of Beaudrifontaine.

(9) Turn left twice and take the Halleur path.

(10) At the end of the Chemin de Halleur, there is a stunning view of the village of Hèvremont and Eupen.
Cross the Hèvremont-Jalhay road and take the small path opposite, which leads you to the centre of the village of Hèvremont.

(11) Turn right to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

(4) Limbourg, a historic town

From 1033 onwards, a castle dominated the valley. It was an allod, and the count’s rights associated with it extended across the Liège region and as far as Saint-Trond Abbey.

Waleran-Udon acquired the site and built a powerful market town that would endure a long series of devastations, fires and reconstructions over the centuries that followed.

The title of Capital of the Duchy, the secure refuge offered by this reputedly impregnable fortress, the zeal of its dukes, and the endless conflicts of the Middle Ages meant the town was besieged on numerous occasions. For six centuries, the sound of cannon fire was part of daily life for the inhabitants.

The greatest military commanders in history laid siege to the fortress: Henry IV of Germany in 1101, the Princes of Orange in 1577, Alexander Farnese in 1578, the Prince of Condé in 1675 and the Duke of Marlborough in 1703.

In the 18th century, the fortress was decommissioned. Limbourg then began to forge its present-day history, one of tranquillity, sheltered within its walls.
There are places to eat on the square in Limbourg.

Also, 6 km from Limbourg, visit the Gilleppe Tower.

(11) Built in 1802, the Chapel of St Francis of Assisi is located in the centre of the hamlet. Its richly decorated altar dates from 1684 (Delcour school).
You can also see the Hauptmann Cross next to the chapel, engraved with inscriptions in French and German in memory of Arnold Hauptmann (1566) and likely originating from the Fagnes.

Hello Philippe,
thank you for suggesting this lovely walk.
We’ve just been on it under rather leaden skies, but despite that, we had a brilliant time.
The various views of the wooded countryside are superb, and our visit to the village of Limbourg allowed us to switch off from the modern world for a little while 😉.

Very nice route, not too difficult but varied with a high percentage of unpaved paths.
