Heundeul Bawi Rock 설악산 흔들바위

Hiking in Seoraksan National Park (Seorak District) 설악산국립공원 설악동지구
Accessible from SOKSHO by bus (city bus), very well marked and equipped, as in all the parks we visited in South Korea. Extremely pleasant in spring; must be extraordinary with the colours of autumn. It feels like a stroll in a city park, even though you are surrounded by nature. Access to some very beautiful viewpoints.

Description of the walk

For a walking tour, entry to the park is free. The bus drops you off at the end of the access road, right at the park entrance (monumental gate).

(S/E) The departure point is located at the cable car for convenience, but of course the entire entrance area can be used as a departure point.
Crossing the entrance area (restaurants and shops), cross the river (dry when we were there but must be impressive in rainy weather) on magnificent stone bridges and take a fairly wide path that goes up to the left of the river.

(1) Continue until you cross the river on a stone bridge and arrive at a very pretty hermitage on the right.

(2) The path continues along the right side of the river. From there, it is a very well-equipped path (with huge sisal mats on the ground where the slope is a little steep) that winds through the forest; points of interest are explained (with English translations); there are toilets at regular intervals. The gradient is fairly even. You will come to a fork in the path.

(3) At this point, take the path on the right and continue, if you wish, to the highest point (the end is in the form of stairs).

(4) This is the highest point of the walk. Return via the same route to reach the park entrance (S/E).

Notes

For some, this walk may feel like a stroll in an urban park, as there are so many facilities along the path and nearby. At the park entrance, there are many restaurants and cafés where you can easily buy food and drink. There are free (and extremely well-maintained) public toilets throughout the park. The path is accessible with any type of footwear, but most walkers still wear good shoes. Please note that it can be slippery in wet weather.

Please note: the elevation calculation is not accurate; the slope is never very steep except at the end of the route, where you have to use a staircase.

Worth a visit

A cable car (not in operation when we were there) provides quick access to a viewpoint that must be magnificent (mountains and sea).
Many longer trails also start from the park entrance.
There are numerous pagodas and typical Korean buildings; there is a temple at the park entrance.
