This circular walk from Stoke provides a good way to discover Hartland Quay surrounded by impressive cliffs and contorted rock layers. Then, the return route goes past an old lookout house in ruins and follows Abbey River.
Park your car at St Nectans Church car park.
(D/A) Follow the path skirting left side of the church, go up a few steps and follow the small public footpath in the grove for 200 metres along properties before you enter an open field. Walk across two fields along the hedge on your left for half a mile before you reach a metallic gate.
(1) Go past "Rocket House" on your right and descend the path in front of you. At the fork, bear left and follow the grassy path along the road for almost 200 metres before you cross over this road. Continue down the path close to the grassy car park and descend the steps leading to the second car park next to "The Wrecker's Retreat". Go past this pub and "Hartland Quay Hotel" (old buildings, read the interesting historic sign!) before you bear left.
(2) Go down the stairs leading to the viewpoint at the end of the land. Look at these incredible rock layers, it's absolutely fascinating! Retrace your steps towards "The Wrecker's Retreat" and ascend the road for 150 metres before you take the footpath "Coast path, Hartland Point 3m" on the left next to the upper car park. Go up the steep ascent which leads again to the "Rocket House". Turn left to the coastal path before the house.
(3) Go past "The Pleasure House folly" which was an old lookout and continue down the path until you reach a junction signpost.
(4) Leave the coastal path (don't cross the footbridge over Abbey River) and follow the public footpath to Stoke (1 mile) for half a mile before you reach a fork with two yellow arrows.
(5) Bear left taking the peaceful path along Abbey River. Then, go through a gate and go across the open field. Past another gate next to the farm building, bear right and ascend the road for 300 metres until you join the main road. Turn right to the cemetery and you are back to the car park.(D/A)
