GM Ringway 9 Greenfield To Newhey 2024
GM Ringway Stage 9 (Greenfield - Newhey) explores the stunning landscapes of Saddleworth, the little bit of Pennine Yorkshire included within the Greater Manchester boundary.
NB. The route has been revised (at least temporarily) near Denshaw, owing to path blockages and unsafe sections on the Oldham Way to the NE of the village. Please take care on any on-road sections on Ox Hey Lane and Wham Lane.
Highlights include:
- A bucolic section of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal
- The picture-postcard hilltop village of Dobcross
- Aerial views of the Roman fort site at Castleshaw
- A panoramic walk along the Standedge escarpment (part of the Pennine Way)
- Crompton Moor and Fold, with their woodlands and waterfall.
Careful attention to the directions is needed in parts.
The route, which is suitable for experienced walkers with good map-reading and navigation skills, requires good visibility. It includes a considerable amount of ascent and descent and crosses high ground. Paths are mainly in good condition but a few parts of the route can be boggy, even in summer.
