Short circular loop around Barroca
A walk starting from the village of Barroca (Beira-Baixa region), situated on the banks of the River Zézere (a tributary of the Tagus). This is an area of traditional schist-stone architecture, where you can see some old houses or those restored in the local traditional style. The route follows the riverbank (weather permitting). Along the way, you can see the ruins of traditional buildings and the remains of a mining processing plant that has profoundly altered the natural landscape.
Circular route from Ameixoeira to Serra das Casinhas
A circular walk starting from Ameixoeiras and heading towards the Serra das Casinhas (859 m).
A lovely route through villages, hamlets, pine and eucalyptus forests, and heathland dotted with heather, gorse, rockrose and other plants.
The route follows mainly forest tracks of varying widths, with some steep climbs in places.
Stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the villages below.
Roqueiro – Serra das Casinhas circular loop
A short circular walk but with a steep gradient.
A mid-mountain route (880 m) passing through woodland and heathland and crossing a few streams, which may be dry depending on the season.
Views of the villages of Roqueiro, Ameixoeira and Estreito, particularly from the heights of the Serra das Casinhas.
Circular walk between Regadia and Retaxo
A circular walk between Regadia (Roqueiro) and Retaxo, along the River Estreito. The river may be dry in summer. The varying elevations offer numerous views, weather permitting.
Official historical trail around Monsanto Castle
The Beira Alta region boasts 12 magnificent fortified villages listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Each village has an official walking route of a few kilometres (usually marked in blue and green) that takes you around the site. And here, it’s a real gem, with the most spectacular castle of the 12 villages, standing impressively on its rocky outcrop. The walk is definitely worth a detour!
