Worth a visit

(1) Uppsala Cathedral, described as the largest cathedral in Scandinavia, is recognisable by its tall red-brick towers and is linked to the country’s religious and royal history. It houses the tombs of Gustav Vasa, Saint Eric and Emanuel Swedenborg.

(2) Uppsala University, founded in 1477, is Sweden’s oldest university and one of the most renowned in the world. Its Carolina Rediviva Library hosts a free exhibition where visitors can see, among other things, the famous Silver Bible (Codex Argenteus) and the Carta Marina.

(3) Uppsala Botanical Garden is free to enter and open from 7am to 9pm from May to September, allowing you to stroll through the grounds and visit the Linneanum Orangery, but there is an admission charge for the tropical greenhouse for adults (60 SEK for adults/seniors/students, free for under-18s, open in summer from Tuesday to Friday 9am–3pm and Saturday to Sunday 11am–3pm).

(4) Uppsala Castle, built from 1549 onwards by Gustav Vasa, overlooks the city and has been the setting for some of the greatest moments in Swedish history. Today it houses several museums, including the Uppsala Castle Museum, which features a free exhibition on the history of the castle and its inhabitants.
