Description of the walk

Park in the Montgesoye cemetery car park.

(S/E) Walk down a few metres to take the path below that heads south-east towards Chambournan and reach the gate to the donkey pasture.

(1) Make sure to close the gate behind you and climb straight up the slightly steep slope for about 500 m. The terrain has been altered to allow for a water pipe.

(2) At the crossroads at the top of this climb, turn right onto the level path, followed by the track that crosses the woods and emerges 300 m further south into fallow meadows. Follow this small, level path running along the edge of these sloping meadows for about 500 m. You will then arrive in a small wood at a crossroads where one path leads uphill and the other downhill, at a place called La Chenoz.

(3) Continue straight ahead on the level path which, 100 m further on, begins a short but steep climb through the woods before levelling out again. You will return to the sloping pastures and the lovely path running along the ridge above the valley.
For a further 600 m, you’ll look down on Vuillafans and its hillside of old vineyards, with numerous retaining walls marking the formerly cultivated land.

(4) Gradually leave the meadows behind to reach a good, gently sloping path that climbs through the woods until it reaches the plateau and the village of Échevannes.

(5) In the village, turn briefly right then immediately left onto the road to Champs Troptard and Suchaux for about 600 m. Pass the sports ground then the farm.

(6) 100 m past the tennis courts, enter the meadow on the right opposite a small car park and head due south towards the reservoir and then the paragliding launch site. Continue straight ahead due south along a path through the bushes until you emerge into a gently sloping meadow, which you will follow all the way down to a path.

(7) Leave the path on your left and take the forest track briefly straight ahead, then immediately to the right into the pine woodland. It starts as a good, straight, level path before becoming a steeply descending track 500 m further on. At the crossroads, take the track on the right which, after 1000 m of a good, level path through the forest, leads back to the road climbing up to Échevannes.

(8) Just before the road, take a lovely hillside path up to the right which climbs gently above the road and reaches Échevannes 600 m higher up. Return via the village street which passes by the chapel and offers a lovely view of the valley.

(5) You can follow the Agrainoir path for 1,600 m to point 10, but it is more pleasant to vary the route by taking the ledge and the small viewpoint marked on the IGN map. To do this, 100 m before the Agrainoir hunting lodge, leave the main white path and turn left onto a forest track that follows the edge of the cliffs and leads to the viewpoint mentioned.

(9) Continue right along the path at the edge of the cliff ledge and, after about 400 m, leave it and take the forest track slightly to the right which leads back to the Agrainoir path. Turn left for 800 m until the end of the path.

(10) Turn right onto the forest track which descends into the woods. After 600 m, follow this good forest track to the left, continuing downhill; it passes through Tangelet and finally reaches the first houses of Montgesoye after a 1,500 m descent through the forest. Turn left to return to the cemetery car park (S/E).

Start from the cemetery at point 10 via Chemin Tangelet, as recommended in the January 2024 review. Then continue from point 2.
From 2 to Echevanne, a lovely ‘perched’ path but with unobstructed views over the valley. Superb. The circular path after Echevanne is good too.
Lovely views and plenty of brand-new benches.
The return route in the upper section is too hidden by vegetation. This part follows route 111387. A combination of the two might be interesting... (Already did 111387 in 04/2022)
As for the guidance on the app, the blue line is often far off the actual path. Sometimes you have to walk 20 to 30 metres to check the blue marker’s route and find the right path.
In good weather, it’s a lovely, pleasant route.

The circular route was re-walked on 21 January 2024. As sbaverel mentioned, the steep climb before point 2 is indeed somewhat overgrown with brambles. However, on the left-hand side, at the edge of the woods, there is a small, clear and well-marked path. Alternatively, as noted, you can take an easier route up to point 2 by using the Tangelet path. Happy hiking!

A lovely walk with a beautiful view of the paragliding launch site.
One slight downside regarding the start of this walk: the slope leading up to point 2 is indeed very steep, and overgrown with brambles following the clearing work carried out some time ago. It would probably be easier to head straight up the path that follows Rue de Tangelet (end of the walk) and reach point two via the well-marked path on the right, even if that means going back the way we came.
Thanks, however, to Xavier for this route, which allowed me to discover the lovely circular route around Echevannes.

We set off from Echevannes. From the paragliding launch site, the path is a bit hard to find; it’s best to head towards the edge of the cliff.
There is then a lovely walk along the hillside in the pleasant sunshine at this time of year.
Return by climbing up to Echevannes via a stony path.
A pleasant walk that I didn’t complete in full, but you’ll have no trouble finding your way back

After the steep climb from point No. 1, there are stunning views over the valley along an unmarked, narrow but clearly defined path.

At Echevannes, continue to Point No. 6, where there is now a mobile phone mast which you will pass, then the reservoir, and across the fields to the hang-gliding launch site. Lovely picnic tables.

Personally, I find the rest of the marked route through the woods rather uninteresting (7-8). I prefer to turn back and rejoin the route (Agrainoire No. 9) or, better still, head down to Vuillafans via the path at the village entrance which, initially, runs alongside the D27.
From Vuillafans, return via the GR 145 to Montgesoye.

Hello, and thank you for your comments. It’s true that it’s not always easy to follow a route description exactly, particularly in this area where there are many poorly marked, little-used paths. That’s why the map is so useful – and why it’s important to know how to use it and find your way around. Did you not complete the second section after Echevannes? Best regards.

A lovely walk along the ridge, offering magnificent views over the Loue Valley. We had a few problems finding our way, particularly when trying to locate the level path at point 2. It seems to us that it would be simpler to describe it as follows: After a fairly steep climb, the pipe trench branches off to the right, even steeper: Follow it for about a hundred metres and turn right onto a small path that crosses the woods, etc.;...
Point 4: end of the balcony path: Shortly after a beautiful grey retaining wall, the path branches off to the left, climbing gently through the woods and leading to the village of Echevannes.
Point 5: The street sign simply reads “Route de Suchaux”
Point 5, on the return journey: The Chemin de l’Agrainoir is not named as such; take Rue du Lavoir and the path that continues from it for about 1 km, then turn left onto a path through the woods (a sign indicates the direction of Montgesoye). The viewpoints are then signposted. The path is clearly marked in yellow and blue. We recommend following these markings, except at the very end of the walk, when you see the first houses of Montgesoye, where the markings lead back onto a path that climbs uphill. Continue downhill along Rue du Tangelet, then turn left to return to the cemetery car park.

Thank you again for this wonderful experience.
