Between sea and heath, starting from La Palme

You’ll experience a variety of atmospheres on this walk: the old village of La Palme, the heath on the plateaus, the industrial port of Port-la-Nouvelle, the beaches and finally the salt marshes.
Short and easy, this walk—despite a few sections on the road—will allow you to discover other landscapes in this region.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Salin de la Palme and the La Pacheyrasso restaurant.
Access via the D709 from Port-la-Nouvelle.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the D709 and take it on the left. Almost directly opposite, take a path that joins a road (very little traffic). Continue along this road on the left, between wasteland and vineyards, until you reach the entrance to La Palme.

(1) At the entrance to La Palme, turn left onto Rue du Lavoir. It passes a pond and leads to the wash house. At this point, turn left onto Rue des Palmiers and continue to Rue de la Mer. Follow this road to the right. At the end of Rue de la Mer, go through the Porte de la Barbacane and continue along Rue Michel Ange into the old village.
Then turn right towards Place Saint-Jean, pass to the left of the church and the castle to reach the cemetery. Turn right into Rue Lamartine then left into Rue des Corbières until you reach the exit of La Palme.

(2) Once at the end of Rue des Corbières, continue along an old road that climbs slightly. It soon becomes a footpath. After a sharp bend to the left, continue to a junction where an old sheepfold is signposted.

(3) Turn right. Wind your way through the area known as Cante-Perdix, amidst the heath and vineyards. At the end of this, join a new path at a T-junction.

(4) Turn left onto it. Leave it at the next junction to head north towards the wind farm. Cross the wind farm and join theGR®367, which is shared with theGRP® (the old Occitan-Catalan border trail).

(5) Take it to the right. Walk easily through the heath, past an isolated house, then, at a junction at a place called Garrigue Haute, head left towards Port-la-Nouvelle and Combe de Buis Ouest. Cross a ravine then descend towards Port-la-Nouvelle. Pass the hamlet of Combe de Buis Est. Reach the roundabout at the entrance to Port-la-Nouvelle.

(6) Cross the roundabout and take the bridge opposite over the railway line. Head towards the town centre along the wide Avenue Charles De Gaulle. This part of the walk is not the most attractive as it crosses Port-la-Nouvelle via wide avenues.
Continue along Avenue Charles de Gaulle until you reach thefourth roundabout.

(7) Cross the avenue before the roundabout and turn left onto Rue Parmentier until you reach the harbour and Avenue de la Mer at the end.

(8) Turn right onto this avenue and follow it along the harbour. Continue along this avenue until you reach the harbour master’s office, the casino and the beach.

(9) Here, there are two options:
- take Boulevard du Front de Mer to the end,
- or walk along the beach. The sand here is firm and walking is no trouble at all. This will take you to the end of the seafront.

(10) Here, there are two more options:
- walk along the beach as far to the right as possible, close to the vegetation,
- stay as close to the sea as possible whilst avoiding the soft sand (this is the option I chose).
For both options, there will be wide stretches of water to cross.
Head to the end of the beach where it narrows to a strip of sand about twenty metres wide, before the large stretches of water where the salt marshes begin.

(11) Turn right. Reach a road running alongside the railway line. Turn left onto it. Follow it to reach the level crossing.

(12) Cross the railway line and walk alongside the salt marshes. Reach the junction with the D709.

(13) Turn left onto it and follow it for a few dozen metres , taking great care. After a sign on the left indicating “Expédition de sel”, take a path on the right.
Stay on this path, which runs parallel to the road. This will take you back to the Salin de la Palme car park (S/E).

Notes

There are plenty of bars and restaurants in Port-la-Nouvelle. On sunny days, bring a cap or hat as there is little shade along the way. Make sure you bring plenty of water too.

Worth a visit

In season, from the car park at the start, take a tour of Salin de La Palme on a little train. Salt shop.
Between (3) and (4) Enjoy the beautiful views here:
- to the right, the Mediterranean glistens in the sun,
- behind, the Canigou, lightly dusted with snow in mid-September,
- to the left, the Corbières Maritimes wind farm.
Between (8) and (9) The port of Port-la-Nouvelle accommodates large cargo ships. An expansion of the port is currently underway to increase its capacity.
Between (10) and (11) This beach is perhaps one of the last of its kind, in the 1970s style. Cars on the beach, fishermen, walkers, and on fine days, many naturists. And this little community seems to coexist in the best possible way.
Note: However, if some walkers wish to avoid crossing this beach, there is a third option: at the end of the seafront, walk along the beach on the right-hand side and, when you reach the campsite, take a path that leads back to the road running alongside the railway line.

A very interesting walk taking in a variety of landscapes: a pretty old village, heath, a somewhat industrial town, then the seaside, salt marshes… you certainly won’t get bored. A few comments and criticisms:

  • Between points 4 and 5, you cross the wind farm, which is a major construction site. In particular, as you approach the GR, the path is interrupted and you have to cross a construction site with no obvious path. You have to carry on straight ahead until you reach the GR, and sometimes climb over barriers blocking your way.
  • At point 5, near the orientation table, the directions aren’t very clear, but you can find your way with the map. You need to take the widest path, which heads straight down towards Port-la-Nouvelle. Given that you have a bird’s-eye view of the town, it isn’t very hard to follow the right path instinctively.
  • At point 10, two options are mentioned. At this point, the walk continues along a long strip of sand, with the sea on the left and a shallow inlet on the right. If you continue along this long strip of sand to reach the road on the other side, you’ll need to cross this wetland, but this isn’t easy without taking your shoes off, or else you’ll get your shoes wet, as the water comes up above the ankle. The first option suggested isn’t described very clearly. Is there a way to reach this road without crossing this stretch of water? It isn’t specified, but looking at the map, probably yes.
  • Point 11 remains very vague in its description, and its location on the map places it in the middle of the water in reality.

Apart from these minor shortcomings in the description and the proposed route, this walk remains a really good choice for exploring La Palme and Port-la-Nouvelle.

An extremely disappointing walk, with very little of interest apart from the stretch through the small village of La Palme. Between the monotonous heath section (which also takes you past the wind turbines), the approach to Port-la-Nouvelle through an industrial estate, and the stretch between Port-la-Nouvelle and the walk’s finishing point, the whole thing is deadly boring.

Best avoided.

A superb hike that can be done whilst minimising the amount of tarmac:
At point 1, unless you want to visit the village, you can bypass it to the north by taking the Combe de Roussel.
At point 6, at the bottom of the railway bridge, you can head down towards the police station and reach point 10 by following the canal.
At point 11, you can reach point 12 by staying on the sand.
And that saves you 2 to 3 km of tarmac.
It’s a shame you can’t cross the salt marshes.
The ‘heath’ section is the most interesting.

There’s a lot of tarmac, so do avoid doing this hike in very hot weather as there’s no shade along the route;

The only interesting points are the view of the plateau and the orientation table;

A very long walk along the beach.

I must say, I did this hike in winds of 80 km/h!!!!!
