From Alameda Garden to Estrella Garden via Edouardo VII Park

Description of the walk

Start your walk at the Alameda Gardens, a large green space laid out around a central axis with a fountain and greenery.

(S) Walk along Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques, then head north-west to Avenida António José de Almeida. Pass the António José de Almeida roundabout and continue straight ahead.

(1) Walk along the right-hand side of the Jardin Gomes de Amorim, a small neighbourhood square surrounded by residential buildings. Follow Avenida Miguel Bombarda, then Avenida Conde de Valdbom towards the north-west (left) until you reach the cultural area of the Gulbenkian Foundation. Cross Avenida Marquês de Tomar, then enter the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Garden.

(2) Follow the footpaths towards Largo Azeredo Perdigão. Go around the garden on the right to stay parallel to Avenida de Berna. Enjoy the botanical richness and tranquillity of the area. Join the cycle path parallel to Avenida António Augusto de Aguiar, leaving the garden (turn left), and you will reach the Gulbenkian Modern Art Centre.

(3) Continue along Rua Dr. Nicolau de Bettencourt. Turn left to follow Rua Marquês de Fronteira. Cross the main roads until you reach Eduardo VII Park.

(4) Enter Eduardo VII Park from Sidónio Pais Avenue. Follow the paths to the top of the park. Go around the large Espelho de Água pond and reach the miradouro. Enjoy the panoramic view of Lisbon. Cross the entire esplanade (towards the south-east) to reach Marquês de Pombal Square.

(5) Go around Marquês de Pombal Square on the right, following the cycle path. Join Rua Braamcamp, then turn right onto Rua Alexandre Herculano. Continue to Largo do Rato.

(6) Cross the square and continue along Avenida Álvares Cabral. Follow Avenida Álvares Cabral until you reach the entrance to Jardin d'Estrela. Go through the gates to discover this romantic park, laid out around ponds, lawns and dense vegetation. Stroll along the shady paths, admire the nearby basilica and end your walk in a peaceful setting.
Head to the central kiosk in the Jardim da Estrela (E), a popular spot for walkers to take a break. Enjoy the benches, refreshments or musical entertainment, depending on the time of day.

Notes

  • Enjoy free access to the Alameda Garden, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Garden, Eduardo VII Park and Jardim da Estrela, with no ticket or formal check.
  • Jardim da Fundação Gulbenkian is open every day from dawn to dusk; the cafeteria is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in summer and until 6 p.m. in winter.
  • Centro de Arte Moderna: open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (until 9 p.m. on Saturdays) and closed on Tuesdays; last admission30 minutesbefore closing time.
  • Eduardo VII Park open 24 hours a day, all year round.
  • Estufa Fria (cold greenhouse in Eduardo VII Park): admission fee (~€3 or free with the Lisboa Card, free on certain Sunday mornings), open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Jardim da Estrela is open every day from 7 a.m. to midnight, admission is free, and it is home to peacocks roaming freely and a central kiosk that is often lively in summer.
  • Bring water, a hat or sunscreen depending on the season. Also make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes for the few kilometres on foot.
  • Use public transport (metro, bus): main stations nearby (Alameda,São Sebastião,Marquêsde Pombal, Rato) to make it easier toreturn.
  • Consider purchasing the Lisboa Card for free entry to the Estufa Fria and unlimited transport.

Worth a visit

Just next to the Jardim da Estrela, look out for the Basílica da Estrela, a Baroque monument characterised by two twin bell towers and a dome. You can reach its belvedere to enjoy a panoramic view of the city (easily accessible on foot from the garden).

In the Jardim da Estrela, take a look at the English-style park covering around 4.6 hectares,featuring ponds,free-roaminganimals(peacocks and ducks) anda central wrought-iron kiosk. It is a popular meeting place for locals.
