I recommend driving up to the Béar Lighthouse for a photo, then driving back down to the semaphore station, which is well worth a visit, then carry on down to the first house in Port-Vendres to park your car in the large Redoute Bear car park at 8 Chemin du Cap Bear, which offers a magnificent view, and leave a car at the end point near the Les Criques de Porteils campsite for the return journey.
(S) From the car park, head down the slope and join the Chemin du Fort Mailly, following it to the left.
(1) Turn right and walk alongside a local motorhome parking area. When you reach a roundabout, turn left onto Avenue du Général Leclerc and continue for a few metres. Take a footpath on the right and join a road.
(2) Turn right, running parallel to Avenue Jean-Claude Delfour, and continue downhill to the next roundabout.
(3) Turn left onto Rue Pla du Port and walk alongside the Port Fruitier International. Pass the Résidence de l’Horloge and the Port-Vendres customs office. Continue along Quai de la République and then Quai François Joli, walking past the restaurants until you reach the roundabout.
(4) Turn left and go up the stairs. Cross Place Jean Jaurès and Place Castellane. Carry on straight ahead, crossing Avenue Castellane and Rue Waldeck Rousseau, then go up a few steps. Carry on straight ahead along Route Stratégique, then Route de la Gare.
(5) Go under the railway lines and turn right onto Route du Val de Pinte.
(6) Carry on to the right along the small, winding track heading uphill towards Fort Sant Elme. The route is quite winding, with a few steep sections.
(7) Turn onto a signposted path on the right. At the top, carry on to the right along the road and arrive at Fort Sant Elme. Carry on straight ahead along the small road leading down to Port-Vendres.
(8) At La Creu Blanca, leave the road and continue uphill to the left along a footpath.
(9) When you reach a road, carry on straight ahead, passing in front of the Mer Air Soleil Functional Rehabilitation Centre. Continue along the Route Impériale for about 1 km. At the junction, take the Route de Port-Vendres for 100 m to the left.
(10) At the La Balette restaurant, take the footpath on the right which runs along the coast. Walk past the Château Royal de Collioure and then the Square Coloni. Cross the footbridge at the Quai de l’Amirauté and arrive at the harbour master’s office. Follow Rue de l’Église to reach the Church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges. Turn left and walk past the Château de la Rocasse via Rue Mirador.
(11) Turn left onto Avenue Mirador; at the roundabout by the Jules Ferry Primary School, turn right and walk alongside the Romain Rolland housing estate.
(12) At the Pla de las Forques car park, turn right. Take the Sentier du Littoral, which runs along the coast. Walk past Fort Carré and on to Plage de l’Ouille. Continue straight on until you reach the car park at Camping Les Criques de Porteils. (E)
