Description of the walk

Start: Drumlanrig Castle Grid ref. NX 851 993

(S/E) From the front of the castle, walk left (West), uphill, across the car park. Walk past the "Stableyard studios" on your left and towards the information board. Then walk along the lane, handrailing the castle on your left to walk over the cattle grids.

(1) At the Y-junction, keep straight following the yellow arrow marker. Then when you see an obvious footpath on the left, take it downhill and reach a T-junction where you turn left following the blue arrow marker. You are now walking with the stream on your right-hand side. As you walk along the riverside, enjoy the scenery and turn right to cross the footbridge and walk uphill.

(2) At the top of the hill, reach a path junction where you turn left. You are now handrail the river below on your left-hand side. On the way up, you start to have some views of the castle on your left and at the top a nice welcoming bench to enjoy the view of the castle and stream.

(3) walk downhill to a junction where you can take a detour left to have a look at the wooden bridge or carry straight on now, handrailing the river on your left-hand side. Along the way, ignore the junction and carry straight ahead along the riverside to walk across a wooden footbridge with a Hydro Power hut on your right.

(4) When you reach another wooden bridge, turn left to cross it over the stream. As you can't enter the garden of the castle keep right, now handrailing the stream on your right hand before the footpath curves away from it to the left.

Cross a wooden gate and walk uphill. You can either walk right up to the hilltop or keep going straight handrailing the wall. In both cases, walk towards the playground and wooden gate which you can see ahead of you. Along the way enjoy views of the countryside.

(5) Cross the gate and walk straight past the playground on your left-hand and across the car park. Walk out via the cattle grids and as you reach the road walk left up the paved lane towards the castle. At the top of the hill you are back at the castle entrance and car park. (S/E)
