From Soufflenheim to the Gros Chêne in the Haguenau Forest

Set off to explore the eastern part of the Haguenau Forest by cycling from the pottery village of Soufflenheim to Gros Chêne on a circular mountain bike trail.

Description of the route

To reach the start point, from Rue de Koenigsbruck in Soufflenheim (D37), turn into Rue du Sable where the fire station is located. Follow the signs for “Parcours de santé/Routes VTT”. Continue along the cul-de-sac to the tennis club, where a large free car park is available. Head up Rue du Sable towards the north-west to reach the start of the route, where you’ll find two information boards about the mountain bike and fitness trails.

Mountain bike trail marker no. 1 (Red)

(S/E) Head into the forest following the MTB markings. Follow the undulating path where you’ll find various fitness trail equipment.

(1) At the fork in the road, stay on the path to the right.

(2) At the junction with a track, continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths and tracks on either side.

(3) At the junction with a track, turn right.

(4) At the crossroads of four tracks, take the track on the left and continue straight on for 1.6 km, crossing three tracks.

(5) At the4th junction, turn left onto the Route Forestière des Juifs (tarmac road) and continue straight ahead.

(6) Before the road bends left to cross the Eberbach, turn right onto the Allée de l’Eberbach, which runs alongside the stream of the same name. Stay on this path for 1.8 km, ignoring all other tracks.

(7) At the junction, turn left onto the Route Forestière de Betschdorf (tarmac road) then cross the Eberbach a few metres further on. Take thesecond path on the right.

(8) Take this path and continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths to the right and left.

(9) At the crossroads, the path curves slightly to the left; continue straight on for about 1.2 km.

(10) At the junction with the Schwabwiller Forest Road (tarmac road), turn right onto it and continue to the fork near an inn and a playground.

(11) Head to the right and stay on the tarmac road, cross the Eberbach once more and continue for a few metres.

(12) When the road curves slightly to the left, turn right onto the Allée Forestière du Gros-Chêne. Follow this lane, ignoring the paths on either side.

(13) Cross the Route Forestière de Betschdorf (tarmac road) and continue straight on until you reach a cross-path and a trailhead opposite.

(14) Turn left at the next junction, continue straight on and reach the next one.

(15) Turn right and continue straight on.

(16) Cross the Route Forestière des Juifs and continue straight on for 1.5 km until you reach a T-junction.

(17) Turn right and you will soon reach the junction with the route taken on the way out.

(4) At the junction you passed at the start of the circular loop, turn left and continue straight on.

(18) A few metres before the path joins the D344, turn right at the Carrefour des Retraités (shelter and pétanque area).

(2) Return to the junction encountered after the start and turn left to rejoin the fitness trail.

(1) Continue straight ahead.

(19) Follow the signposts to take the narrow path on the right, which forms a circular path that joins the main path, then continue straight on until you finally emerge from the forest (S/E).
