From Pernand-Vergelesses to Villers-la-Faye

A very beautiful walk, especially in October when the vineyards are ablaze with colour, in the Hautes-Côtes between vineyards and woods in a hilly landscape, with pretty views, particularly above Pernand-Vergelesses. The hike is fairly easy, on good paths, despite a few short but steeper slopes. You can picnic in the wash house at Villers-la-Faye, which has been converted for hikers.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Pernand-Vergelesses hill "Sur Frétille", accessible via Rue de Frétille, then head towards "Point de vue".

(S/E) Go to the viewpoint, with its orientation table, at the Notre-Dame de Bonne Espérance oratory. Retrace your steps back to the car park.

(S/E) Take the steeply sloping road to the bend, then leave it for a path leading to a road, turn right and follow it for about thirty metres.

(1) Go down the path on the right alongside a vineyard until you reach a road.

(2) Cross it, then a second one, and take the path opposite that goes uphill, turning left, then right and back up between the vineyards. At the top, take the path on the left through the woods. When it comes out onto the vineyards, continue straight on along the "Sentier du Pays Beaunois 3" and you will come to a junction with a signpost for "Pernand-Vergelesses Butte de Corton".

(3) Turn left onto the GR® de Pays des Grands Crus (follow this to Villers-la-Faye). Walk between the vineyard and the forest until the path turns left.

(4) Leave this path and take a trail that enters the forest. This trail branches off to the left and continues horizontally before descending, ending in the Combe de Vry, curving north and then east to a good path.

(5) Take it on the left, walk along the vineyards and arrive at the Magny-lès-Villers tennis court.

(6) Turn left onto Rue du Lavoir. At the end, after the right-hand bend, take Rue des Pierres on the left, which climbs steeply. Then turn left onto Rue d'Echevronne, which curves to the right. You will reach a crossroads at the next bend in the road.

(7) Leave the return route on your left and turn slightly right onto Chemin de Foigery. At the bottom (elevation 347), turn right, then left. The path turns left and arrives at an intersection.

(8) Leave the return route opposite, turn right, then right again. Go around the castle (tower) and take Rue du Château to Route de Marey. Take this road to the right. Turn right onto Route de Magny and you will reach the wash house on the left-hand side.

(9) Retrace your steps to the previous intersection.

(8) Leave the marked trail by turning right, then left. At the bottom, turn left to reach the GR® de Pays trail at the junction at an elevation of 347 metres. Turn right, heading south, and climb slightly until you reach a junction you passed earlier.

(7) Leave the GR® de Pays by turning right onto Route d'Echevronne, which you will soon leave to take Chemin de Bully, slightly to the left. Continue along this path, which enters the forest, until you reach a large intersection.

(10) Turn left, then quickly right and after a hundred metres look for a discreet path on the right.

(11) Take this small path on the right, which winds through the woods and leads to a large clearing where you will find a shelter and the Chapel of Notre-Dame du Petit Bois at the far end. Go around them by taking the path on the left until you reach an intersection.

(12) Take the path on the left, then immediately turn right. The view opens up, and you will come to a path on the left. It turns to the right and arrives at the edge of the plateau, where you can enjoy a beautiful view as you walk forward.

(13) Turn left and continue for about a hundred metres. (Note: this path continues along a vineyard, but is not marked on the map).

(14) Turn right onto a slightly downhill path that joins a wide stone path.

(15) Continue straight ahead and return to the initial crossroads of the circular.

(1) Continue along the outward route in the opposite direction: follow the road for about 50 metres, then turn left onto the path that leads to a steep road on the left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

(9) Wash house in Villers-la-Faye, with a large monastic table and bench, seating around twenty people. Ideal for picnics.

Between (11) and (12) there is a large, unfinished shelter.

Between the car park at the start and the viewpoint, there are picnic tables.

If you do not wish to picnic at the Villers-la-Faye wash house, you can shorten the walk by going directly from point (7) to point (10): 7.3 km; elevation gain 150 m.

During hunting season, consult the ChasseInfo app. In 2025-2026, hunting takes place on Saturdays and Sundays.

Worth a visit

There is a viewpoint above Pernand-Vergelesses at the start of the walk, as well as at point (13).

Beautiful views of the vineyards along the route, especially in October.

Several oratories and chapels: Notre-Dame de Bonne Espérance; Chapelle Notre-Dame de Bonheur (250 m from the route, on the D 115c); Chapelle de Notre-Dame du Petit Bois.

Mont Saint-Victor, above Villers-la-Faye.

I personally couldn’t use the GPX track on my watch (was it a bug on my watch or a problem with the file I was trying to import?). But when I checked the route on Visorando whenever I was in doubt, I had no trouble following it. The Oratory of Notre-Dame de Bonne Espérance is currently undergoing renovation, so it’s worth revisiting once the work is finished, as there wasn’t much to see at the moment. A pleasant walk along paths through the vineyards and through the woods (narrow tracks and wider paths). It’s a shame the route doesn’t include a few cabottes, as there are clearly some in the area (though perhaps I’m confusing it with another place). A straightforward walk, with few people out and about that day.

A very pleasant walk along woodland paths bordering the vineyards.
Best done from May to October when nature is at its most beautiful.
The route is virtually unmarked, so the GPX track is very useful.

A superb ride!
The only minor issues: we got a bit lost at the start and wandered around between 10 and 11... thank goodness for GPS.
The scenery is magnificent and the little chapel in the woods is very cute.
We'll come back when there are leaves on the trees and in the vineyards, and this time we'll do the whole walk (we shortened it as suggested, going from 7 to 10: no picnic, sniff).
It must be great in autumn, but during the week to avoid the hunters.
Thank you!
