From Lugrin to Meillerie via the hamlet of Les Combes

A linear hike, which requires careful planning, connecting two landing stages on Lake Geneva at a higher altitude. An often shaded route that nevertheless offers beautiful views of the lake. Oratories, chapels and churches are also along the way.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Tourronde landing stage, on the edge of the D1005, on the left-hand side when coming from Évian-les-Bains. For access and parking options, see the practical information section.

Directional signs at major intersections.

No markings

(S) From the landing stage, cross the D1005 with caution (traffic is generally heavy). On the other side, take a narrow street, the Route de Chez Cachat. Go up a series of right-left-right turns and pass a dead end on the right-hand side. Further up, ignore a street on the right, turn left and cross a stream.

(1) At the next crossroads (cross), first turn right then left to cross the D21 at the pedestrian crossing and take a small street uphill. Ignore another street on the right and go straight ahead. Cross the Chemin du Champ Bosson on the left and turn right onto Rue de Chez les Nives.

(2) You will come to a larger street, Route des Prés Parrau, and follow it to the left. Take the first right, Impasse de Chez Mercier. In a slight right-hand bend, leave the road and take a path on the left. Shortly afterwards, turn right to cross the D321 with caution and follow a path that climbs opposite.

Red and yellow markings

(3) At the T-junction, follow the GRP® Littoral du Léman to the left. Walk along a fairly flat path in a shaded area, then along a meadow on the left. Pass a house on the left and a few on the right, turn left and join a road.

(4) Follow this road to the right and cross the hamlet of Véron, ignoring all the side roads. Pass a chapel and you will soon reach an intersection.

(5) Turn right onto a stony path towards Les Combes.

No signposts

After about 100 metres, when the path turns right, take a smaller, less stony path on the left. Climb steadily.

Red and yellow markings

You will come to a wide path. Follow it to the left and cross a stream over an old bridge.

(6) At the end of the bridge, continue straight ahead and enter the hamlet of Les Combes (ignore the path on the right towards Chez Cachat). Cross the hamlet (beautiful old houses, drinking fountain) and ignore all the lanes on the left.

(7) At the end of the hamlet, turn right towards an isolated house and immediately take a path on the right. Then turn left and climb steadily into the forest. Ignore all the paths on the left and continue to an intersection.

(8) Continue straight ahead towards Meillerie (ignore the path that branches off to the right towards Le Hucel). Descend slightly.

(9) At an intersection, continue straight ahead towards Meillerie (ignore the path on the left towards Troubois). Climb a short steep slope and descend just as steeply. Further on, at an intersection (elevation 535), continue straight ahead towards Meillerie. Cross a stream and reach a crossroads at a place called Bois-Coment.

(10) Turn left towards Meillerie and walk past the cemetery on your right.

(11) Turn right, leaving the church of Meillerie on your right and walking alongside a stream on your left. Pass under the old railway bridge. Cross the D1005 with caution (traffic is usually heavy) and take the small sloping street opposite. At the fork immediately ahead, turn left and descend to the Meillerie landing stage.

Notes

Access by car:
The hike is linear, so you will need at least two vehicles:
- At the start, park in the car park next to the Lugrin landing stage (S). If there is no space, park in another car park 150 m further east, on the right-hand side of the D1005, just before the artisan fisherman's shop (green-plastered house) and before the marina.
- Upon arrival, park in the car park along Quai Marin Jacquier, to the right of the Meillerie landing stage (E) when looking towards the lake. Access to the quay is either via a traffic light at the eastern exit of Meillerie or via the alley opposite the town hall, which you can walk down at the end of the hike (steep slope).

Access by bus:
Take line 10 of the EVAD network (Pays d'Évian - Val d'Abondance), which connects Évian-les-Bains and Saint-Gingolph. For the departure point (S), get off at the Lugrin-Tourronde stop. At the arrival point (E), get on at theMeillerie-Ruisseau des Étalins Chef-lieu stop.

N.B. For many years now, the Compagnie Générale de Navigation (CGN) boats have no longer served the Lugrin and Meillerie landing stages. This is a shame, as the return trip by boat was very pleasant.

Hiking boots are recommended.

No water sources identified along the route. Restaurant at the Lugrin landing stage (S). Restaurant at the Meillerie marina, about 400 m east of the landing stage (E).

Detailed map useful (at least the one accompanying this description).

Worth a visit

- Beautiful views of Lake Geneva
- Véron Chapel (5)
- Beautiful old houses in Les Combes, between (6) and (7)
- Meillerie Church (11)
