From Houlgate to Villers-sur-Mer via the Falaises des Vaches Noires

Discover the Falaises des Vaches Noires (Black Cow Cliffs) from the heights and the shore. They are so named because of the limestone blocks piled up on the beach and covered with black seaweed, which make them look like cows. The Falaises des Vaches Noires were already renowned in the 18th century for their fossils and exceptional stratigraphy. Many fossils can be identified in the sand (please note that digging in the cliffs is prohibited).

A FEW PRECAUTIONS:
- The beach is not accessible at high tide. It is essential to check the tide times before setting off. Only enter the beach at low tide, 3 to 4 hours after high tide. See Practical information.

- It is forbidden to climb the cliffs or remove fossils. However, you may collect fossils that are exposed on the surface of the sand.

Description of the walk

The walk starts at the bottom of the 100-step staircase on Houlgate beach, in front of the entrance to the Camping de la Plage campsite. There is a small free car park in the street leading to the campsite, about 100 metres before it.

(S/E) Climb the 100-step staircase (actually 139 steps) built of brick in the 1880s. At the top, turn left onto Rue Baumier, and you will be on the GR®223. At the right-hand bend, continue straight ahead until you reach a newly installed metal staircase.

(1) You will arrive at the orientation table where you can enjoy the view. Go back down and continue eastwards through the old Bois de Boulogne along the Chemin du Sémaphore. You will arrive on the Route de la Corniche.

(2) Follow it for about 2.5 km. Continue to the junction with Chemin Blandin, shortly after the campsite and the entrance to the Résidence du Domaine de la Corniche.

(3) Just after the Résidence du Domaine de la Corniche, turn left onto Chemin Blandin. After the right-hand bend, continue for about 400 m, then turn left onto Chemin de l'Église. Stay on this paved road until you reach the car park of the Notre-Dame d'Auberville church.

(4) Visit the church, then return to the car park and take the Chemin de l'Église au Manoir on the left, heading east. You are still on the GR®223. Ignore a tarmac road on the right and stay on the GR® until the next junction.

(5) The path branches off to the left and is called Chemin du Manoir à l'Église. It leads through the forest towards Villiers-sur-Mer. You will come to afirst roundabout, where you take the road on the right, Chemin du Manoir, until you reachthe second roundabout.

(6) Take thesecond street on the left, Rue Convers. Immerse yourself in the seaside atmosphere among the villas and chalets of Villers-sur-Mer. At the end of Rue Convers, you will come to a bend in another street, Rue Charles Koechlin.

(7) Follow it to the left, then keep right, then right again, along Rue des Bosquets with its pretty brick villas. Go straight ahead and, atthe second crossroads, turn left onto Rue Pigeory. At the end of the street, after the right-hand bend, you will come to the steps leading down to Villiers-sur-Mer beach.

(8) Go down to the beach and turn left, following the coast. BE CAREFUL to only set off at low tide, 3 to 4 hours after high tide. If necessary, wait on the beach for the sea to recede.
Walk along the beach, admiring the cliffs, the limestone blocks washed up on the beach and covered with seaweed, and the fossils emerging from the sand or clay flows, and return to the 100-step staircase (S/E).

A beautiful hike of about 14 km with a total elevation gain of about 200 m. The only slight downside is that there isn't much of a sea view on the upper section. Be sure to wait until the tide is going out (3 to 4 hours) as it is impossible to pass on the cliff side.

There is a significant elevation gain at the start, with an orientation table offering a superb view of Houlgate.
The first part (at altitude) is of moderate interest in terms of landscape quality: a few rare sea views and a departmental road for most of the way. On the heights of Villers-sur-Mer, we had the pleasure of seeing a large number of beautiful character villas.
When returning via the beach, it is important to follow the instructions regarding the departure time, taking the tide times into account. The beach is magnificent with an unusual landscape. When the sky is blue, there is a beautiful view of the harbour and Houlgate.
We regularly go on this hike for its beautiful views, villas and beach with a beautiful sea.

A magnificent hike along the beach from Houlgate to Villers (be sure to check the tide times to avoid getting stuck).
The route from Villers to Houlgate is much less interesting as it runs partly along the road, but it is necessary to complete the circular route.

Overall, we were quite disappointed. The first part (at altitude) is not particularly interesting in terms of landscape quality: no sea views, mostly along a country road. Furthermore, as regards the return trip via the beach, we took care to follow the instructions regarding the departure time, taking the tide times into account. However, even allowing for extra time, we were forced to walk over rocks and pebbles for much of the way, which was not very comfortable and sometimes even dangerous. We later realised that this was probably because the tidal coefficient was low that day, so be sure to adjust the instructions according to the coefficient on the day. The beach is beautiful, but this "chaotic" return journey spoiled our enjoyment a little.

We followed the route but in reverse so as not to be hampered by the tide. Half of the route is on roads or paths, but as it was the height of the holiday season, this didn't bother us except for one or two kilometres.
The route is well described, and the section along the cliffs is magical.
We will definitely do it again.

Hello,
It's true that the upper part of the circuit runs along a road.
However, the most interesting part is the return trip along the beach.
If you were unable to do it because of the tide, it would have been better to choose another route.
I'm sorry to hear that.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday in Normandy.

This route is generally unmarked. It follows a significant portion of unsecured road. Tide times prevented us from returning via the beach.
