In the woods of Beauziac and Saint-Martin-Curton

A really lovely route that’s best done in summer as there’s very little sand.
In wet weather, some sections are muddy and slippery.
Snow-covered tracks, dirt tracks, winding paths through the woods and a bit of sand at the end.
The route passes near pidgeon hunting huts. Do not use this route during the pidgeon hunting season in October and November. Adhering to this unwritten rule helps to keep the paths open. Mutual respect between hunters, cyclists and walkers.

Description of the route

Park in the shopping centre car park on Rue des Abeilles.

(S/E) As you leave the car park, opposite the petrol station, turn right onto the road and then left onto Rue des Abeilles.

(1) Turn right and walk past the Casteljaloux health centre. Continue to the end of the road and take the path leading uphill. Keep going straight ahead until you reach a track.
Follow it straight on (do not turn right) until you reach Route de Beauziac.

(2) At the road, continue to the left and ignore the first path on your right

(3) Turn right onto a path that climbs towards Beauziac. Follow it all the way to the end, keeping straight on.
When you reach a road, follow it to the main road passing through Beauziac.

(4) Turn left, then take the road on the right that goes downhill. Ignore the one on the left which goes to Saint-Martin-Curton.

(5) At the bottom, take the white track on the left. Follow the main track, ignoring the paths to the left or right, some of which lead to houses.

(6) At the top of a hill, turn right onto a small road.

(7) Leave the road, which turns 90° to the left, and take a track that goes straight on. At the end, rejoin a section of road, turn right and follow it for a few dozen metres until it ends (dead end).

(8) Caution! Change gear to cross the ditch. When you reach the Casteljaloux–Grignols road, turn right and then immediately left. Take great care and be cautious; the road is busy and there is limited visibility of oncoming traffic.
Head down the road.

(9) Turn left at thefirst track on the left, towards La Garenne.

(10) At the private track on the left, leave the track and take the path on the right. Follow it straight on until you reach a road. Please note: the path is muddy and slippery in wet weather.

(11) At the road, turn right, then a few metres further on, take a track on the left.

(12) Leave the track very quickly by turning immediately left. Take a small path, pass a house on your left, then turn right at a right angle. Follow the path, keeping to the left, until you reach a small road. Continue to the right and cycle on until you reach the main road between Casteljaloux and Grignols.

(13) Turn right and then immediately left. Take care when crossing, as it is a busy road. Follow the path downhill.

(14) Ignore the main track that goes straight on and turn left onto a small track that winds through the woods. Follow it to the end. Turn right and pass a pidgeon hunting hut on your left. Follow the main track, keeping to the left, until you reach the houses at La Tapie de Haut.

(15) Leave the road on your right and take the path on your left that leads downhill. When you reach a small copse, veer to the right then immediately to the left and take a track through the woods. This narrow path winds its way between the trees and joins the main path a little further down. Follow it to the right, then turn left before you leave the woods. Continue for about a hundred metres.

(16) Leave the main track and enter the woods on the left. A narrow track with a series of bends. You’ll come to a road.

(17) At the road, turn right then immediately take a track on the left.

(18) Leave the main path (just before a ruin on your right) and take a narrow little track on the right which winds through the woods. Be careful not to miss it. Follow the path as it winds through the woods. At one point it rejoins the main path before heading back into the woods. Ideally, you should have the GPX file to hand. If you miss these small paths, it doesn’t matter; the main path leads to the same place.

(19) At the end of the path, rejoin the main track and then turn left. Then turn left again to reach Marsan. Follow the track which leads to a road.

(20) At the road, turn right, then left. Pass through Lestrade and cycle on until you reach a white track on the left, which you should take.

(21) Leave the white track, turn right and take the path furthest to your left. Follow it, keeping to the left, until you reach the road.

(22) At the road, turn left then right. Take the white track to La Garre on the left and ignore the track on the right which leads to a house.
Then follow the track, keeping to the right, until you reach the Beauziac road and follow it for a few metres to the left.

(23) When you reach the (white) church on your left, take the path on the right and keep going straight on.

(24) Ignore the path that bends sharply to the left; turn right, then immediately left. Continue straight on.

(25) Turn left and follow a path uphill until you reach a road. Turn right and follow it until you reach the main road between Casteljaloux and Saint-Michel de Castelnau. Cross the road and turn left. Continue until you reach the first small road on the right.

(26) Follow it, with the golf course on your left.

(27) At the end of the road, take the (sandy) track.

(28) Cross a bridge, then go straight on and cross a second bridge. Follow a footpath which leads to a track. Turn left and follow the track, ignoring the turnings on either side, until you reach a wide white track.

(29) Turn left and follow it to the Pindères road. Turn left and cross the Casteljaloux–Houelles road. Head left towards Casteljaloux and join the first track on the right.

(30) Take the white track, passing first one gate and then a second.

(31) After the second barrier, turn left, then follow the first path on the right to Lac de Casteljaloux.

(32) At the lake, turn left and walk round the lake (there’s a charge to access the lake in summer; if so, turn right instead). Leave the lake area.

(33) At the corner of the solar farm, turn right towards Casteljaloux along the nature trail.

(34) Leave the nature trail, cross the bridge over the Avance and join Rue de la Forge. Turn left, then right onto Rue Marcet and left onto Rue des Écureuils. Follow this road until you reach the Casteljaloux–Houelles road. Cross the road and take the cycle path towards Houelles.

(35) Turn right onto Impasse des Pins, then right again onto the old railway line. Carry on straight ahead. Cross the road leading to Saint-Michel de Castelnau and continue straight on until you reach the shopping centre (S/E).

Notes

Having a GPS or your phone mounted on the handlebars with the GPX route is a good idea so you don’t miss the little paths that lead deep into the woods. These paths are really lovely: winding, gently undulating, with sections running between the trees.

A lovely route, although some of the paths are very poorly maintained, if at all, and are almost impassable (brambles, tree trunks), particularly section 12, where you need to take the winding path on the right (not the one on the left) up to a statue and then join a main path behind it.
The route passes very close to the lead works, so you really shouldn’t do it during the hunting season.

A little-used route where you have to find your way in places, and a section through pigeon hunting grounds with hunters who aren’t particularly welcoming
