In the developed Marais Poitevin

The villages of Vanneau and Irleau are situated in the heart of the Marais Poitevin Interregional Park, within a site designated a “Grand Site de France”. The Marais Poitevin, developed by humans since the 12th century, is one of the richest wetlands on the Atlantic coast.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite the church in Le Vanneau.

(S/E) Walk round the church on the right to reach Impasse de l’Aumée. Turn left to go behind the cemetery and turn right onto Rue de la Couarde. Turn left at the bend before the plywood factory.
Cross the bridge over the Fossé de Virecourt and continue along the tarmac road. Take two bends and reach a junction before another bridge (tarmac road).

(1) Turn left and continue to the village of La Chaume, cross the bridge and join Rue de la Chaume. Follow the road to the left for about 150 m, then cross over and arrive at the junction.

(2) Take the street on the right towards the centre of Irleau. Pass the Grand Port d’Irleau on your right and continue left along the Grand Rue d’Irleau until you reach a junction with a roundabout on the left. Turn left, cross the roundabout and take Rue des Essarts, which climbs towards Sèvre.

(3) Turn right onto the path just before the last house. At the bridge over the Grande Rigole de la Garette, push the barrier preventing vehicles from crossing the bridge and continue along the path which turns left, then further on to the right along the Fossé des Vergnées

(4) Cross the footbridge over the Fossé des Vergnées. Continue along a grassy path, then cross a small tarmac road and carry on straight ahead along a dirt track.

(5) Turn left, staying on the dirt track. Turn left onto the tarmac road.

(6) At the road leading to Irleau, turn right (picnic table) and, immediately afterwards, take the dirt track on the left. After about 200 m, leave the dirt track that branches off to the left and continue straight on along a grassy path.

(7) Cross the D102 and continue straight ahead on the grassy path until you reach a more passable track; follow it.

(8) Turn left and, after about 200 m, take the first path on the left. Cross the D180 and continue along the path opposite.

(9) Turn left, pass a farm and join the Route de Niort (D102).

(10) Turn left towards the village of Le Vanneau. Pass the Route de Saint-Georges on your left and, a little further on, take Rue de la Poste on the left before the bend. Join and cross Rue de la Mairie, cross the square behind the war memorial to reach the car park opposite the church (S/E).

An interesting route at the start, which takes you past the ditches and square meadows typical of the Marais. The second half is considerably less interesting, even though you walk along pleasant paths, though there is little shade at times. Take care at point 8: don’t stray from the route; follow the map, as the path you need to take on the left isn’t clearly marked.

A very pleasant walk through the Marais and then across the fields. The signposting is sometimes missing or unclear, but the directions and written descriptions are very precise.

A really lovely walk. There are signposts everywhere, so you don’t need a map. After visiting the church – which is well worth a stop – the route through the marshes is particularly pleasant, especially on a hot day! Cows, herons, and absolute peace and quiet. A moment of pure bliss! After the marshes, the walk remains pleasant, with paths that are just as quiet and often shaded, though less interesting. We’ll happily do this route again, but in the opposite direction, to save the best for last.

A really lovely walk through the Vanneau and Irleau marshes! We discovered two very charming villages! We took the opportunity to make a short detour to the village of La Sèvre and via Sainte-Sabine! A magnificent area! At this time of year, the pruning is severe, with lots of fallen poplars, and a little surprise at point number 4. With the rain over the last few days, the fields were flooded, but it was possible to reach the footbridge by walking along the edges! We sank in a bit! A lovely little encounter between points 5 and 6: a flock of sheep with some tiny lambs, much to the children’s delight!

The end is far less interesting, as you’re no longer in the marsh. The section through the field to reach the footbridge over the Fossé des Vergnées would be impassable in the event of even moderate flooding.
