From Ancizan to Fréchet-Aure

Third stage of the Ténarèze. From Ancizan, follow the GR® 105 north-east, crossing summer pastures and beech woods with views of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre. After Cadéac, the trail leads to Arreau, the former capital of the Aure Valley. Then take the old railway line (now disused), a flat path lined with ferns, to Fréchet-Aure. This balcony village, listed as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", offers a panorama of the Pyrenees and a preserved pastoral heritage.

Description of the walk

White and red markings for the GR®105

(S) From the Chemin de la Marioule, head up towards the top of the village via Rue Salcédo. Pass the town hall and continue along Rue de l'Église, going around Saint-Blaise Church on the left.

(1) Pass under its magnificent tower and cross the Ruisseau d'Erabat stream. The balcony path continues above the village to a bench, offering views of the snow-capped peaks of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre on a clear day.

(2) Follow the corbelled path to Cadéac.

(3) Pass under the Romanesque church and take the steep path on the left, which overlooks the village and its stone houses. After a short descent, cross the village.

(4) Turn left at the fountain.

(5) The path climbs slightly towards Arreau.

(6) Continue straight ahead at this intersection. Further on, descend via the GR® and join the D929, Route des Lacs. Follow it to the right for a few dozen metres.

(7) Turn left and cross the bridge over the Neste d'Aure. Continue to follow the GR®105. Cross the bridge over the Neste du Louron and turn left for a few dozen metres.

Yellow markings

(8) Leave the GR®105 on the left to join the Chemin de Fréchet, which runs alongside the old railway line and the banks of the Neste. It is a flat, shaded path lined with ferns and chestnut trees.

(10) As you approach Féchet-Aure station, the path climbs gently towards this village, perched on the mountainside, with its cobbled streets and slate roofs.
