Park in front of the Camille Julian Vocational School.
(S/E) Take Rue du Val Chaumery, cross the Canal de Marseille and, about a hundred metres further on, turn right. Follow the yellow and red markings ofthe GR®®2013and the blue markings along a wide track heading west.
(1) After passing under a high-voltage power line, turn left at the crossroads. Follow the track for about 250 m and turn onto the path on the left which climbs gently to the Croix de Saint-Marcel, passing under high-voltage power lines twice.
(2) Enjoy the view from the cross and continue along the path.
(3) At the junction, turn left. Continue straight on to Col Galvaudan, then follow the track to the left, heading south-east, for about 50 m. At the cairn at the edge of the track, turn right onto a path that quickly splits in two: left (south) to reach the source of the rushing waters and right (west-south-west) towards Mont Saint-Cyr.
(4) Turn right and follow the path leading to the watchtower. The remains of this old watchtower are barely visible, but a sign reading “La Vigie 492 m” is painted on a flat rock. On the right-hand side of the path, you can still make out an arrow pointing towards Saint-Marcel and another towards Mont Saint-Cyr. To the left, a path leads to the Source des Eaux Vives.
Follow the path to the right (north-west); it is barely marked at first but becomes quite easy to follow.
You’ll find (not often enough) old brown markings. As the path isn’t used much, the vegetation tends to take over, but you can’t miss it!
(6) The path heads north after passing a small rocky outcrop (very easy if you spot the brown markings). A little further on, you’ll come across the two high-voltage power lines. After the pylons, the path descends towards a house. At this point, you’re right in the thicket, but you’ll be out of it very quickly. Leave the house on your right and follow the path that goes round the rocky outcrop.
(7) Just a little more effort to climb up to the ruins of the old castrum. From the top, you can still enjoy a beautiful view of the valley. Turn back.
(7) Turn left onto a path that is barely visible from above but very pleasant under the canopy of trees. This path descends to Boulevard de la Forbine. Follow this boulevard to the right for 20 metres, then turn left into Parc de la Forbine.
(8) Keep to the left, follow the path and return to the junction at the high-voltage power line.
(1) Turn left, then veer left again about fifty metres further on to avoid taking the same path as on the way there. Walk down under the high-voltage power line and head towards the Canal de Marseille. Turn right to walk alongside it at a distance.
(9) Turn left to get even closer to the canal and follow it to reach Rue du Val Chaumery.
Follow this street to the left to return to the starting car park in front of the vocational college (S/E).
