Cotehele quay from Calstock

Park your car at Calstock car park (close to the football field).

(S/E) In the centre of the village, past Tam Inn, go up "commercial road" to the left for 100 metres and turn left again when you see the sign "low bridge 1/2mile ahead". Follow this flat and quiet road along the river during 1/2mile going straight past Calstock Boatyard and ignoring a track going up on your left after the bridge.

(1) At a junction when you enter woods, turn left and follow the footpath to Cotehele House Gardens and Quay (metallic signpost).

(2) Bear left at the next fork ignoring Cotehele House signpost heading towards a lovely Chapel overlooking the River Tamar and the viaduct. Bear again left at the next junction past Cotehele National Trust car park and you are on the Quay. Enjoy the place and take a look at "Shamrock", a vessel built in 1899 to carry cargoes between Plymouth and Torpoint manure work. Past the Edgcumbe and Discovery Center (both on your right), continue on the road leading to a bridge. Leave the road and follow straight the path before the bridge.

(3) At the first fork, bear right (don't follow Cotehele mill signpost) and at the second one, bear left (don't follow Cotehele house signpost). Follow the path straight ahead past a wooden bridge until you reach a road. Go straight at "Newhouses" and follow this road until you see a second path (public footpath signpost) on your right.

(4) Ascend a little bit, then after a few steps turn right at the junction when you see a blue/green container. Follow this narrow path leading to a gate and permissive access (read information and look at the map!). Go through this private land, follow the road, turn right at the first junction and cross over the second road heading towards the stile. follow this public footpath straight along the field, then enter a second field at a gate. Go down along the hedge on your left targeting electric pole and gate. (notice a tower on your right in another field).

(5) After the gate, bear left, then right at the fork until you reach a bench overlooking the valley. Bear right and descend after the bench, leave steps on your right and continue the path heading towards a footbridge over a stream.

(6) Once past the footbridge, turn right following the large path along the stream. Continue straight past a swing, then a nice house in the middle of ruins and finally a bridge for locals. You are now back at the first junction of the walk (1), go straight follow the same way along the river heading the car park.(S/E)
