An easy walk along the Norfolk coast that includes Cley next the Sea and Salthouse. The route uses a section of the Norfolk Coast Path. In season there are many oportunutites to see extensive bird life.

Description of the walk

(S)From the car park start walking west along the Norfolk Coast Path National Trail. The sea should be on your right. Continue along this path for just over 2 miles until you reach the car park (grid ref. TG048452) at the mouth of the River Glaven.

(1)Continue on the Norfolk Coast Path as it turns inland towards Cley next the Sea. Initially the path follows a road (on your left) and heads towards Cley Windmill. Reaching the main A140 road in Cley, turn left into the village.

(2)Bear left following the A149 and stay with this main road past the Visitor Centre on your left. Reaching another car park (grid ref. TG059441) with a small copse opposite, continue along the main road locate a signed path on your right leading initially down a track. There is a small reservoir on your left as you join this track. After approximately 200 metres take the footpath on your left that leads across the Walsey Hills into the village of Salthouse.

(3)Walk across the green to the A149 and continue east along the main road to the end of the village where you turn left down the road to the sea and the car park where you started.(E)

Practical information

This easy walk along the Norfolk Coast offers an insight into this area. The start is the small car park behind the beach near Gramborough Hill (grid ref. TG081443). This can be reached off the main A149 coast road just east of the village of Salthouse.

Refreshments are available in Cley next the Sea and also at Salthouse. We recommend the Harnser in Cley next the Sea, which has a lovely café and bar as well as B&B rooms.

Quite a slog walking along the shingle beach (which was nearly half the walk) - was better when we moved down to the sea line. Good views towards the wind farm out at sea.

The best place to watch the engines close up is the level crossing on Kelling Heath where the steam engines require a full head of steam to get their loads up the incline from Weybourne.

A walk between East Runton and Cromer searching out old folklore.Using country lanes and tracks, this circular trail navigates around East Runton to visit the various locations in Runtons history and folklore. Woodhill House is the location of an unidentified skeleton found during road widening. Thains Lane has the village's old smithy. The old Windmill sets the scene for the emanation of ghostly lights that cross over to a copse. With a pub stop at Cromer and return via the redefined course of the Norfolk Coast Path, this makes for an excellent short walk on a spooky Autumn evening.
