Description of the walk

Several car parks are available nearby, including the one at Place St-Louis, the starting point for this route

(S/E) Take the Promenade des Petits Fossés path, which starts below Dinan Castle. Follow it to the Esplanade de la Résistance.

(1) Take the stairs on the right, leave the town hall on your right and cross Rue du Marchix. Turn left, then right into Rue Thiers. Continue until you reach the first street on the right. Turn into it to reach the Thiers car park. Cross diagonally to the left and take the path under the Saint-Julien Tower. Turn right onto the square, cross it and climb the steps to reach Rue Jean Boucher.

(2) At the roundabout, go straight ahead, climb the steps and take the Grands Fossés counterscarp, which goes around the Beaumanoir Tower and joins Rue Saint-Malo. Then turn right onto Rue de l'École and go through Porte Saint-Malo. Continue straight ahead and look up to see the Clock Tower. Continue straight ahead and walk the entire length of Rue de la Poissonnerie until you reach the crossroads.

(3) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on Rue de l'Horloge. The Clock Tower is 50 metres away. Leave it on your left and continue. Pass the Théâtre des Jacobins on your left, then the Collège Roger-Vercel, where Chateaubriand and Broussais studied. Cross Rue du Général de Gaulle, pass through Porte Saint-Louis and turn right.

(4) At the intersection, turn left onto Rue Beaumanoir and continue straight ahead on this street. Go down the steps to Rue du Moulin au Duc and turn left. At the end, turn left and then keep to the right. Continue to Léon Abbey for a short visit.

(5) Turn back, go up the street and leave Rue du Moulin au Duc on your right and the calvary on your left. Continue straight ahead to the crossroads (from here, you can climb up to Léhon Castle by taking a path on the left). Head towards Lanvallay/Calorguen (D12) by turning left. Turn left onto the path that goes around the castle mound, first turning right then left. The path leads to Rue du Val de Rance. Continue left and walk along the Rance.

(6) At the bridge, turn right to cross the river. At the end of the bridge, turn left and follow the path to the port of Dinan, about 2500 m away, along the Rance, passing under the viaduct and reaching the Old Bridge of Dinan.

(7) When you reach Rue de la Madeleine, turn left and cross the Old Bridge. Take the hill opposite, Rue du Petit Fort, to Porte du Jerzual.

(8) Before the gate, take the steps on the left to reach the Venelle Michel. When you reach Rue Michel, turn right, continue along Rue Haute Voie, then turn left onto Rue du Coignet and then Rue Neel de la Vigne. You will arrive at the Basilique Saint-Sauveur. Turn left to reach the Promenade de la Duchesse Anne. When you reach the ramparts, turn left towards the Tour Sainte-Catherine.

(9) Retrace your steps and stay on the ramparts to reach Rue du Général de Gaulle below. Once you reach it, turn left downhill until you see a stone door on the opposite side.

(10) Go through the door and follow the path. Pass in front of the Tour Pentièvre and reach Impasse Saint-Louis. At the end, turn right to reach the junction from the outward journey.

(4) Turn left to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Dinan Castle:
An iconic monument of the town, Dinan Castle stands as an exceptional example of princely residences from the late medieval period. Built in the 1380s at the request of Duke John IV to assert his power over a town that was hostile to him, Dinan Castle rivals the royal castle of Vincennes, residence of King Charles V of France.
Dinan Castle is open from April to January.

The Clock Tower:
Built at the end ofthe 15th century by the wealthy bourgeoisie of Dinan, the Clock Tower stands 43 metres tall, dominating the old medieval city and offering an exceptional view of its monuments. A visit to the Clock Tower is an opportunity to discover a clock mechanism with a long history: in 1501, Duchess Anne granted the people of Dinan the privilege of having a clock in their communal tower; the following year, a clock mechanism manufactured in Nantes in 1498 by the German Hamzer was brought to Dinan. Still located in the Clock Tower, it is now one of the oldest clock mechanisms in Europe.
Open between April and October. For more details, click here.

Religious buildings: Saint-Sauveur Basilica, Saint-Malo Church, Saint-Magloire Abbey in Léhon, Sainte-Catherine Chapel, Saint-Joachim Chapel.
