Muneville-le Bingard Mill Trail

Starting from the village mill, set off to explore the sunken lanes of Muneville-le-Bingard. Some of the sunken paths were reopened by volunteers from the Bocage et Patrimoine Munevillais association in 2024. A few paths are maintained by volunteers, depending on their availability, and the grass may be a little high at certain times of the year.

Description of the walk

Park in front of the church and above the cemetery.

(S/E) With your back to the church, go to the end of Rue du Moulin, turn right, cross the Ay, and take the tree-lined avenue called La Cauchie in Norman, which leads to Rue du Bourg, D53.

GR®®223BWhite and red markings

(1) Cross it carefully at the speed bump , then take the street on the right, walking along the school on the right, and arrive at the D68.

(2) Cross it carefullyto the right and take the road on the left towards the village of Coquière.

(3) In the village, turn left and continue along the road for about 200 metres.

(4) Then turn right onto the path that climbs towards the village of Haut Bingard.

(5) Turn right onto the D434 and continue along the road. 100 m after the water tower, leave the D434, which turns left towards a long descent, and take the path opposite the road. After about 300 m, you will come to a path on the right.

(6) Take this path and, shortly before reaching the village of Coquière, turn left onto the path. In the middle of this path, there is a slightly tricky section crossing a field, particularly for mountain bikers. A pallet has been installed to help you climb the steep slope.

(7) Cross the D68 straight ahead, with caution, and take the C12 municipal road to the village of Le Petit Auney. At the entrance to the village, turn left onto the path towards La Roque, passing by a farm.

(8) At the crossroads, turn right onto the C9 municipal road. Cross the Roque bridge (the Ay river flows underneath). After the bridge, take the D431 road on the right for 50 metres, then turn left onto the path that joins the GRP® Les Trésors Cachés du Coutançais (Hidden Treasures of the Coutançais) at a crossroads.

GRP® yellow and red markings

(9) At this crossroads with the C8 municipal road, turn right. Before reaching the village of La Richerie, take the path on the left to avoid continuing on the road and taking a dangerous bend. At the end of the path, cross the C8 municipal road and take the path opposite, which descends towards the village of Muneville.

(10) Cross Rue du Bourg and take Rue de la Fontaine Saint-Pierre, above the cemetery. Then go around the cemetery by following Rue du Moulin, which descends towards the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

In the village:
Saint-Pierre Church (15th century). It houses a 14th-century Virgin and Child, a sculpted group (c. 1500) representing Saint Mark and a medieval baptismal font, all of which are listed as historic monuments.

Village mill: the mill has existed since the 18th century. It is located on the coastal river Ay, which had many mills (up to six in the commune).
The flour mill belonged to the Toulourge family (landowners in Muneville) before becoming the property of the Rapilly family in 1913, the last millers before the mill ceased operation in the 1980s and 1990s.
Over the years and with technical advances, the mill underwent changes until after the war. Many residents of Muneville worked at the mill.

Nice walk, but best done in dry weather, as many of the paths are very muddy and almost impassable the day after heavy rain.
