(S/E) From the lower car park at Malbrouck Castle, walk down to the village of Manderen. Shortly after crossing the bridge over the stream, take the steps on the left leading up towards the church.
(1) Opposite the church, follow the road to the right until you reach the signpost. Then leave the main road and follow Rue du Ravin to the hamlet known as Le Moulin.
(2) Leave the road and enter the forest, following the signposting along the path on the left.
(3) Along the way, a signpost indicates the option to visit the Husprung resurgence (Husprung means ‘spring of the stream’), which is a resurgence of seepage water. You can actually see the water emerging from the ground there! (The walk to the spring takes 20 minutes, there and back). Otherwise, continue straight on until the next fork.
(4) Leave the path and turn right, crossing the Ruisseau d’Apach (low flow in summer). You can take advantage of the gaps in the trees to admire the view of the valley and the castle. Follow the ravine, keeping the stream on your right.
(5) At the junction above the village of Manderen, turn left, heading west, towards the Kirsch-les-Sieck oratory.
(6) Just before the oratory, follow the path on the right until it joins the D64.
(7) At the cross, cross the road carefully and head left. After a few dozen metres, leave the road and take the path on the right. Continue along this path until you reach the hamlet of Haut Apach.
(8) Cross the bridge over the Ruisseau d'Apach and take the road running alongside the stream on the right (note a wash house on the left). Then begin the climb towards Belmach.
(9) Turn right to cross the hamlet, passing the chapel on your right. On leaving the village, follow the road to the left until you reach a right-hand bend.
(10) Leave the road by turning left and continue along the path leading straight ahead. Follow the German border until you reach the Chapel of Peace. Note that at the chapel, a bench on the left provides a spot to stop and admire the valley.
(11) This chapel was built in 1996 and is unique in that it is situated precisely on the border. Inside, you can see a list of the victims of the three Franco-German wars, arranged not by country but in alphabetical order. Walk past the chapel, continue along the road towards the village of Merschweiller and cross the village.
(12) At the exit, head up towards the forest and take the path on the right towards Malbrouck Castle. At the end of the road, continue to follow the yellow markings through the forest to reach Malbrouck Castle.
(13) Follow the path down to the left, running alongside the castle, to return to the lower car park (S/E).
